Question Iphone RPF SPAM - tapatalk app (answered)

This just started happening to me 10 minutes ago. Almost every RPF subforum I enter presents an iPhone pop-up pushing "Tapatalk". It's some forum happy app that is not free, and I am not interested in. It's pretty frustrating.

I'm only getting the pop-up on the main page once on Android, still kind of annoying for those that want to view the site normally... It's got to be crazy annoying to get it on every forum... A quick Google search reveals that the popup annoyance issue isn't unique to this forum it's just the way it is... But it also appears allowing cookies might stop some of the popups... The pop-up is also spawned by a Java script, might be better for the site to remove the detection script and just make a sticky thread...

I just spoofed my User-Agent on the computer to iOS 3 with mobile Safari and the popup only happened on the main page and only once, I suspect you might have a cookie issue that isn't saving the fact that you clicked the popup already...

Thanks Ex,

I bet you are correct. I'll need to spend some quality time figuring how to config safari on my iphone. I'm definitely a novice user with apple products.

I wonder what is kicking the first instance off? Is my browser spamming me or is this initiated from the RPF's embedded advertising? If it's apple's safari try to pimp apps I am gonna be really unhappy with Apple/Safari.

Also I've not upgraded Safari or my OS in the last few days, and this just started.

There is a new line of code added to the site with the Tapatalk addon, when you now visit the RPF it does a browser detection, if it detects a mobile browser on a platform that Tapatalk supports it will toss the popup at you to go purchase Tapatalk... That is unless you are just a lurker then you can use the free version of Tapatalk...

Doing some initial testing to see how this works on the RPF. Not sure if it will stay or not, but we are looking for a mobile platform. And Exoray is right, unless you have a cookie issue you should only get the notice once.

If anyone has suggestions on solutions like Tapatalk (or Forum Runner) we are open to testing and suggestion right now. With so many of you now checking the site via mobile devices, we want to provide the opportunity for a fast and clean solution.

Personally, I really like Forum Runner, but it only works for iphones and that leaves all you droid lovers out... :(

Personally I'm content with just browsing it normally when I'm on the phone... But I can understand that some want the dumbed down mobile version to streamline viewing...

Why not for starters just install a mobile friendly light weight skin/theme rather then dealing with plugins and appz... That way it's cross platform from the get go, there are some real stripped down light weight ones out there formatted for small screens already...

If we weren't on the verge of moving to vB 4, which can't use vB 3 skins, I would agree with you and ultimately that may be the answer after the move.

Art,

Thanks for the reply. I am have no issues at this point, and appreciate the RPF keeping current. Whatever happened in the background stopped the pop-ups. I might like tapatalk, but was unsure what was driving it.

My biggest handicap with mobile rpf-ing on my iPhone is when I want to scroll and move a chunk of text to a different area. At this point I am not sure how ctrl-x a paragraph. If I could it is still a struggle for me to move that text any distance beyond the radius of where I touched into edit mode. My work around is to edit, click done and then scroll up and edit again.

I'm trying out Tapatalk now since the RPF added it, and so far no popups (I'm on Android). The app is not perfect, but it at least makes the RPF readable on my phone.

Thanks guys!

Tapatalk wtf#$@q!

Everytime I browse the RPF with my iPhone now, if I go to a new page, I get this popup: This forum is iPhone Native! Click OK to learn more about Tapatalk for iPhone. Even if if I click ok, the popups persist. Can you guys look into this? Thanks.

Re: Tapatalk wtf#$@q!

Found this: Blacklist for Userclient avoiding Popup - Tapatalk Community Forum

And also this from another forum:

Folks.. this is from Tapatalk.

The notification can be removed by commenting out the template edit, I believe the admin can do it for you guys.

On the side note this notification should display only once. Lately we have found an issue with Opera browser that the cookies are not registered. The up-coming plugin update will have this issue addressed.

Let me know if you have any thought and comment about Tapatalk, you can always visit us at Tapatalk Community Forum - Powered by vBulletin

Re: Tapatalk wtf#$@q!

sorry guys, i did a search on 'taptalk'. came up empty, so I started a new thread. doh!

I clicked the pop up to read about the app but I'm still getting the pop up. Quite annoying. Any suggestions? I've done the "soft reset" but no difference. :/

Hey SG,

Mine ended that night. I figured I needed to go to each forum once and say "no", but got frustrated at the 6th one. :lol. I put my phone down, and tried a few hours later and had no issues after that point.

On an interesting note, it is outing iphone owners.

Good luck,
Mike

Since downloading tapatalk I have found myself spending endless hrs just browsing the forum as it seems very quick at updating and easy to use, and as for paying... that's what jailbreaking is for ;-)

A mobile platform sounds good, once things are in place to do that.

I haven't installed tapatalk, although it's reared it's head on a few forums I visit. I'm not sure what the benefits of the app are exactly, but for now I can mess with the screen resolution and view threads here and elsewhere easily enough via my phone, for free.

Tapatalk is optimized for your mobile device and brings the site up much more quickly and in an easy to read format.

vBulletin is now working on developing their own app and if it is better, when it is released, we will move to that!
