Invincible Robot Helmet WIP

I'm looking for advice on how to go about making a replica version of Robot's helmet from the comic "Invincible". (Seriously, it's the best comic in the universe. If your not reading it you're missing out.) See the pictures below for details.

I'm assuming I could do it the same way most people make Iron Man helmets, as the only electronics I'd want to install were to make the eyes light up. (Just green instead of blue, as you can see from the pictures.) Obviously there are many different ways that people make Iron Man helmets, but I'm not sure which method would be best for this project/ my skill set. I don't necessarily want to make it wearable, but rather just a nice display piece.

Anyways, I'm really an armature when it comes to prop building (I've done a few Nerf repaints, and a few other small projects) so I would appreciate any advice you can give.

Thanks!

Cool idea for a project. I also LOVE this book.

There are a few options/roads you could take for this build but it would all depend on your experience/confidence with certain skills. With this being a replica of a 2D medium you've kinda got a fair bit of wiggle room in regards to accuracy.

If you've access to a 3D modelling program (Sketch up, Maya, Solidworks) that can output an .OBJ (I think) you could use Pepakura, there are loads of threads on here to help you out, or 3D print it.

You could sculpt and mould it or fabricate it like Volpins daft punk lids. All viable options with their own pluses and minuses.

Have a look at some of the builds on here to get a better idea of what you're personally equipped to deal with.

I really look forward to seeing this build happen.

You can commission someone to make you the 3d model
obviously you have to pay them for that service i know a couple
fierfek, helagak, pepcowboy , laelle
all of them great 3d modellers
or like i do for my helmets, buy some clay and an armature and start sculpting, ;) take care and let us know how it goes

Love this comic and Robots helmet is awesome. That looks like his new one (I'm not up on the issues I've been following in trades so I'm a bit behind)

Can't wait to see this.

Great to see all the Invincible love!

I think I'm leaning towards clay sculpting. But I'm wondering, is there a way to get a finished model without molding and casting if I go that route? Like a way to just harden the clay once I'm happy with the sculpt?

I'm glad I cropped those pictures to avoid spoilers then! It definitely is a new suit though.

you could use an epoxy clay but you'd need to work pretty fast (as in, do it in a day) so it doesn't cure on you, or you could do it out of sculpey, and then bake it to cure it, but that'd be a pretty big project. You're probably better off clay sculpting it, brushing on the mold and then casting it if you're going to do that much work.

I'd love to 3D model it for you but I'm just completely devoid of time. It would take quite a bit to print it in pieces because of the size, then it'd have to be finished out and you'd still want to cast it after all that work. I'm very close to having my work acquiring a makerbot z18, which would actually make printing it a snap, but the timeline for that is unknown.

This is also one of my fav books, #111 was insanity. I'm assuming you're going to do robot's new iteration from the pics.
