Invade! Invade! Invade!--General Ursus helmet Planet of the Apes

I just saw this, Professor~! I would LOVE one of those recruiting posters, and yes, Apemania was where I was able to find good reference shots.

Still futzing about how I am going to accomplish the shell. Probably go with resin, so I am researching and still have to contact Smooth-On.

Feeling so poor. Just bit the bullet and awaiting materials to move forward with this project.

Materials have not come yet, but I just decided to double-check, after a fellow ape commented that my Urko foam latex is too small, and so now I think my helmet is too small once the mask is in place. I'm going to fluff it up some more, which means I will have to remove the middle portion, add more monster clay, and then resculpt it back.

I am going to rephotograph the sculpt so that it could be compared against Apemania's photos through Photoshop. Here is an overlay through photoshop, with a help from a friend from a different forum since I lack photoshop skills so that I can see where to tweak the sculpt.

Sorry you have to do some re-sculpting, but I suspect the final result will justify your efforts.

Thanks for the progress pix. It's a fun one to keep track of.

One step forward, five steps back! Working on getting the shape even all the way around before I rebuild the middle portion and really smooth things down.

I heard some where the at the basis of URSUS's helmet was from the Pam Am stewardess helmet / Hat from 2001

Here's also a link to someone making the Pan Am helmet

2001 Spacesuit - Pan Am

Hope this helps.

I suspect the “2001” similarities may be just a coincidence.

Morton Haack based Ursus’ costume on a Samurai warrior...

The oblong helmet was meant to suggest the crested skull of a mountain gorilla…

But, yeah, the two helmets are definitely the same basic shape – at least when viewed from the front.

Any updates, Jessica?

No updates. Waiting for more photos from an ape friend.

The only exciting occurrence was moving him to the safety of my bedroom when we had a party:

OMG that Pan Am helmet link is WAY AWESOME!! I'm so far from taking those dreaded molding steps...

New plan...more adjusting...I decided to use Apemania's gorilla to size up the helmet. It's so top heavy now...

This is totally cool you are doing the helmet, it's been a 'down the road eventually' project of mine for awhile now. Look forward to seeing your build man. Best!
