Man, you keep making me want to go watch the movies. Cool project. Can't wait to see further progress. :thumbsup

Re: Invade! Invade! Invade!

Well done, Jess. What msterial are you thinking of casting it out of?

Martin I think I'm going to cast it in resin and then cover it with leather. I'm using monster clay. Not sure if I want to add the hieroglyphs now or later, separately and then glue on. I just want to try to get it as accurate looking as possible.

Sounds promising. Can't be heavier than the all rubber Apemania one. You need gorilla sized neck muscles to keepit on your head :eek

Re: Invade! Invade! Invade!

I have concluded that the middle portion of the helmet is messing up getting my proportions to mirror each other, so I have decided to remove it and get the shape perfected first.

Re: Invade! Invade! Invade!

Very nice Jess. Also cool that I get to see the clay in action before I order some.

I keep seeing Mars Attacks! whenever I look at the first image :angel

Re: Invade! Invade! Invade!

I have recessed the edge surrounding the hieroglyph area in preparation for a layer of leather on my cast. I am going to use a thick leather for the hieroglyphs and not sculpt them on, so this helmet is actually not that far from getting completed. Figured it's easier to shape the clay as much as possible now and avoid or minimize future dremel work later. I also tried to bevel the edge of the helmet, but it wasn't working as neatly as I wanted...so I gave up that idea and will have to dremel that part later.

I just splurged on some leather from Italy and it will be delivered in about 10 days. I can't wait to see my helmet done. I'm going to have to make or find a hat display stand to keep this hat on...wondering where in the house I can display it when I am done. Somewhere within easy reach so if I need inspiration, I'll just wear the hat on my head.

Any day now the leather should come. The leather paint has been ordered and delivered. I will finalize the sculpt as soon as the leather comes in. The brown and green paint are for painting up the leather for my 1:9 and 1:6 scale leathers that I will emboss (for my Planet of the Apes dollies).
