Alright, so the build begins.
First step was to cut out all of the holes. Thankfully knowing where to cut the holes is made easy because of how we cast the masters. There are five holes to be cut, and all use standard size hole saws to do so.
Each hole has a type of cup to support whatever instrument comes out of it. There are are two straight edged cups, two tapers lipped cups and a hemisphere. For the hemisphere I will be using a 3" hemi from Plastruct. The other pieces will 3D printed and molded. In the meantime however I came up with a great hack for the straight walled cups.
I made the straight walled cups using the exact same hole saw that I cut the holes with in the first place. I simply ground off the teeth and cut a slot to receive the forceps. I used some liquid nail to hold it all in place, and once that cures I'll add fiberglass to strengthen it.

Next week I'm meeting with a wood turner who has made patterns for me before to discuss the topper for the droid. He will do different pieces, the larger two litter looking piece, and the smaller beer bottle insert. Once the patterns are done they will be molded and cast in resin so they can be a part of the final kit.

So far I figure that all of the parts minus the metal bits, big light, accurate syringe and the prosthetic arm can easily be found on eBay, so those pieces I'm going to focus on creating castings of.....well except the light. Another board member makes those.

Making big strides this last week or so.
I've gotten all of the cups designed with the help of a friend and they've been 3D printed. Those will be molded and become part of the kit. I also picked up some 3" hemi's from Plastruct for the cup for the syringe as well as finally gotten a pretty good start on the rear claw. Next step is to mold it and reshape it then remold to the right shape.
Oh....within a week or so I should have the topper done.
My goal is to offer the kit with all of the structural parts, most of the little bits that are planted all over the thing, and rear claw. The remainder of the parts are readily available on ebay for around $275 total, and it hardly seems worth trying to mold a bunch of $25 parts and then sell them for about the same. The only expensive part is the tonsil tool...which I am working on a cheaper alternative for.

The topper is back from the pattern maker. It's a little tall but it's designed that way on purpose so I can sand it to size once it comes out of the mold. These parts will be roto cast in black resin. I should have that done in the next few days.
Also I started a rough assembly of it on a base. My intent with this kit was to design it so that a single 1/4" threaded rod holds it all together. I need to add some spacers to hold the top dome lower plate to the dome, but other than that, this is how it will assemble.

Alright....everything is molded and castings are being made.
The outer part of the topper is made in fiberglass and the inner part is rotocast resin.
The cups are all resin castings of 3d printed designs especially made for this project. I'm excited about the headway I'm making.
