Limited Run Interrogator Droid Body Kit

UPDATE 3/18/15

FINAL PRICE: $850 plus shipping

The tooling is all done on every part

The kit will include:

- R2 dome, which has been modified to be the IT droid dome
- lower dome with inset spheres
- weird looking center plate with ring on bottom to fit lower dome and octagon cut into the top for the equator section
- matching bottom of top dome plate with matching octagon.
- Rear Claw
- resin greblies
- tool attachment cups
- Upper Dome topper (2 pieces)

What it Won't include:

- two prong clamps
- three prong clamp
- tonsil tool
- syringe
- forceps

These parts can easily be found on ebay and with the exception of the tonsil tool, are probably just as cheap to buy the real things then it would be in resin.

This is basically designed to all sandwich together with a threaded rod all the way through the thing, which I think is how the real one was done.

The price on this for kit is going to be $830 plus shipping. The domes will be done in fiberglass, and the plates in cnc'd PVC. The additional parts will be cast in resin.

You will have to find your own medical instruments, but as I make other pieces, I will make them available as well to those who are in on this as cheaply as possible.

And now....for pictures of my work in progress.

Gregg

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Have you thought of casting the medical instruments in resin?

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

I hate to say it, but I think for the most part they would beyond what I would feel comfortable casting. Not to mention the fact that with the exception of tonseltome they all would cost less to find on eBay than what I would charge to make.

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

I haven't forgotten about this....just had to switch gears on a couple of things.

Anyhow... So I started playing around with the equator part and decided that it needed some more stability than my original plan, so I had two octagons cut and screwed them together with a 1" nylon spacer in between them. The two plates are screwed to the bottom plate as one piece, and then the top piece will nestle on top of it.

I also drilled a 1/4" hole through the center of all of the plates and plan on drilling a hole through the top and bottom of the hemispheres so that a long 1/4" threaded rod can go through everything bolt it all together.

Here are some pics from what I did.

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Me too. Next week I'm going to meet with the fiberglass shop about molding and casting these

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Hey guys! I dropped the domes off at the fiberglass shop to get a quote and a timeline. I still have some work to do on them, but not much so this should get in to high gear pretty quickly.

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Alrighty....

I just got off the phone with the fiberglass shop, and with the between the two parties interested in this I can feasibly do it. So this is a go!

Time line:

I need about 1 week longer to finish doing prep work. At that point I'll need a 50% deposit for the kits. Molding will take about 2 weeks, and once the molds are done I'll ask for the balance of the kit. Casting will take another week or so, so if everything goes according to plan, they should be ready to ship out a month from today....so around Nov 13. At that point we will need to figure out shipping costs.

Does that sound ok?

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

One thing that has always bothered me about this done is that the etchings were soft and I wanted them deeper. After inspecting some pics of the real thing at the MotM exhibit, I realized that the real one had hand etched lines, so I'm making these so they aren't as soft before I mold it.

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Top dome is in primer so I can continue to fine tune it. It will never look machined because the original had the lines hand etched, but I want it as clean as possible.

Re: Possible Interrogator Droid Body Kit

Final parts of the tonsillectome tool mold is done. I ended up having some extra rubber so I'm going to mold the syringe next. I think that should be easy enough to do.

Syringe parts are molded. I'm waiting on some new resin to try doing casts. The plan will be to have resin castings of the top, bottom, and plunger end where the thumb goes, and then have acrylic tubing for the main body of the syringe and a metal rod for the plunger rod.

Oh....and this part is going to be available in the next week or so from another RPF member. It's the exact right light for the bottom dome. I'm super stoked about this. I'll get with him and make sure it's ok to post the details.

The red lights are on their way.

I am so excited and owe a huge debt of gratitude to RPF member andy19422 for making these available to me. These are the big red lights that go on the bottom dome and they are cast directly from the original source piece, which I believe was a RAF runway light generator.

Andy is making these available for around $20 each (12 pounds). I'll post pictures of them with my dome as soon as I get them.

Also....I"m at this weird point where the one of the two people who committed to this has gone radio silent on me, so I'm not sure if this is really going to happen as a kit. I'd hate to build it and then have people want it, but I can't mold this just for me either. If anyone else is interested I'm ready to mold this now.

I've decided to go ahead and mold these since there was one person who really wanted one. I should have molds done in a couple weeks.

I am definitely excited to be in on this project. I hope others jump on this opportunity because this really will be a unique piece.
