First post! Woohoo! First off, this forum is HUGE and full of just incredible talent. I can't believe I haven't signed up years ago and now I'm proud of being a part of this enormous community of fellow movie prop fans.

I figured I'd like to share my first resin casting nightmare... er, project here, a scaled-down replica (though still large) of the top section of the Idol pedestal.

Here is the master pattern in the works. It's made of foam with carved details, later coated with an air-drying modeling compound. Once dry it's hard as a rock.

Beginning stage. The pillar segment is two round cut pieces of foam. The top and bottom surfaces are 1/2" foam core board.

After tracing on a template of the side pattern, the carving begins.

IMGA0084.jpg

Added air-hardening compound.

IMGA0085.jpg

Top portion completed. Tooled in some stone-like texture and cracks.

IMGA0095.jpg

Bottom portion complete.

IMGA0094.jpg

Sculpting the side pattern.

IMGA0097.jpg

A completed section of the side pattern with added textures.

Completed master pattern. Ready for moulding.

This project's been a nightmare to finish and it's claimed our breakfast table for over a month... but I got it done! The molding process was a near disaster, but in the end, after some ingenuity, and some online help from an expert model-making friend of mine I was able to rescue it. This casting is semi-solid resin. Basically about an inch thick outer layer of resin and a solid foam interior. It's still super heavy though at about 20 pounds or so.

That idol stand is sweet!

that looks incredible ive hardly seen a stand attempted, and its a really great job.
my only gripe is this:

while im absolutely perplexed how your idol is such a beautiful gold(ive had mine for 6 years now unpainted because i cant figure a good way to do it), the eyes stick out, because they're supposed to appear like eyes, and not painted gold.

this is a picture of the real idol, with the gold all flaked off from age. i found a few of it from the film but they were too small.

its not just your idol with gold eyes, its pretty much every replica idol ive ever seen.

To set the record straight here, I only made the stand. The idol replica sitting on my stand is the replica by Sideshow Collectibles, based on one of the supposed "stunt" idols, none of which were known to have glass eyes. Only the hero prop with motorized eyes, and the "fixed-eyes" version you posted above had glass eyes. Once Indy pulls it off the pedestal and runs away with it, it's a fully plated idol with gold eyes (either painted pupils, or drilled... there's still controversy on the subject, but most evidence points toward it having simply painted dark dots for pupils).

But I hear ya. I also wish there was a glass-eyes replica out there but I only know of ONE studio who made them (and no longer sell them), and one other guy in Spain who's working on one that's looking absolutely spectacular.

awesome, i have to watch it more closely next time i watch it. i always remembered a blue tint to the pupils so i wasnt really sure id found the right pictures(even though the sites i found all looked the same). i know you made the stand, i really liked it.

i wonder why sideshow would have replicated a stunt one then. it doesnt make any sense. lol, that explains why every replica idol ive ever seen looks like that too.

Hey Will! Yeah, finally signed up. Thanks for curing my heart attack when I thought the mold was shot. Still a problematic mold from hell, but it works.
