Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Fantastic detective work!

I can upload all the insert files to my google drive tomorrow. Getting the fonts and the potential sources for the photographs would be extremely helpful, and I'd like to participate in that.

For one, finding the fonts for the folded letters would make recreating them rather simple. As I go through and recreate the letters and such, I'll upload them to a shared folder.

How did you find those fonts? I'd like to identify the font on the back of the baseball card. Here's a photo inspecting the back, and if it helps, I've skewed the image in Photoshop to straighten it out.

Thanks for the kind words and for sharing the maps!

The first thing I do when I want to search a particular font is to clean up the image, convert it to grayscale, then back to color, this way when I add some lighting and contrast the image will not have weird coloration (B/W on the left and colored on the right):
Screenshot 2025-01-24 080421_b.png

I use this site for the links to the main font recognition sites ==> Best Font Finder | Identify Fonts from an image using tools. Usually start with the MyFonts one because you don't need to do much, just select the area you want recognized. It is important, for better results, to highlight words with particular letters, like in this case the letters M, N, A or G. If I don't get good results with this site, I use the WhatFontIs or LikeFont (I recommend to create free account on both sites for some extra features for the recognition process).
Because the image is low res, it was a bit hard to find the correct font, but not impossible:
Baseball Set.png

The font family is Mesmerize ==> Mesmerize Font Family · 1001 Fonts and I used 2 variants: Mesmerize Rg (regular) and Mesmerize Sb (semibold).

Usually the handwritten text should be separated before recognition (MyFont do it automatically, WhatFontIs have a separation function, while LikeFont do a mixed job, so here is better to separate the letters).

I hope this helps!

Hey, thank you SO much for such a comprehensive explanation. This will help me out a great deal.

Thanks to you finding those fonts, I was able to remake the back of the baseball card in higher quality, and clean up the text on the front.

Next step, printing it out on card stock!

Very nice! Do you know the correct printing size?
I think the best size is probably 3.5in x 2.344in. Frankly, the scale looks different in the journal vs in Indy's hand—smaller in the journal. Standard baseball card height is 3.5in though, and that looks about right. For the scale of the images I posted, the relative width would then be 2.344in

EDIT: I ultimately settled on 3in tall (for now), which makes the card look good for the scale of journal I'm using, and is closer to the "real life" scale of the T206 tobacco cards upon which it is based (thanks dbuck!). It's not so small as to look noticeably different from the in-game item, and would more plausibly fit in a loose tobacco package. One thing to note, the text on the back of the card avoids associating it with tobacco, and instead with the "Maryland Molasses Co." Maybe in-universe, the card was in fact pulled from something like this molasses candy tin? :)

Good point. Looking at the screenshot of the journal spread zoomed in, that size seems right.

I’d say the game card in his hand is larger, perhaps 3.5 inches tall. Very big for a baseball card, way too oversized for a tobacco card. I didn’t really pay attention to it at the time, I just saw T206 style cards. Tobacco cards were sized to fit in the packages, they varied by manufacturer, and the modern size would not fit in a pack, so if I were to print one I’d go with the historically accurate size.
It’s possible the designers simply googled baseball card size and got a modern size, or just made it larger for gameplay if they did know the original size. Either way, it can be any size you want.

Did some test prints this morning, to start figuring out scale. I like what I arrived at for the card. I took dbuck's good advice about scaling it smaller than I had originally thought.

The print I have now is smaller than the in-game item, but looks about right for the journal, where it will ultimately be displayed. It's closer to the size of the T206 cards, but not quite as small (3in tall rather than 2.63in). This seems to match well enough for the size of the journal I'm using.

Once my blank journal comes in, I'll start to transfer the background sketches Indy does for each area on to paper! I think I'll focus on getting all of the items for the Marshall College area done first, and move mostly sequentially from there

Run these 2 images through Topaz Photo AI:

Use them to make your own card and College ID.
I had been thinking, when printing out photographs for the journal, to have the headshot on photo paper. That way I can glue the headshot to the ID and give it some more texture & heft.

marshallcollege idcard clean.pngmarshallcollege idcard no headshot clean.png

I've cleaned up the texture file, and I've created an alternate for those who'd want to print out the head shot and attach it separately. The lined "Photo I.D" frame on the second one is smaller than the head shot photo, and you can mount the head shot slightly askew as in the original without seeing the frame

Whoops just saw someone else has been able to extract files as well, ignore me

Woohoo! Let me know if you're able to find the texture files for the items when you pick them up in the world. I've only been able to find the images of the items within the journal. So they have clear tape on them, and many of the letters are folded. As well, any backs to the inserts are not visible.

Examples above. It would save a lot of time to find the item textures!

In any case, I have screenshots of every item in the game, so the actual content is accessible
There's stuff like this in the files (left version), but you'd have to edit the colors to match the other (my try on the right)

I have found another font, used on the postcard, called Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift (link ==> Greifswaler Deutsche Schrift Font · 1001 Fonts):
Postcard Writing.png

And the text:
Adalbert,

einzuatmen.

Ich hoffe, es geht dir gut, Bruder.

Theodor
Just copy this text, then change the font in the program to the one from the link. You might need to manually adjust some of the words/lines.

In this case, none of the font recognition programs have worked, so I typed germanic fonts in Google and in the first link I wrote one of the words from the postcards (what I thought is dihiff was in fact Schiff) and with one eye on the results and the other on the image, I have found the correct font (this is another example of how I search/find fonts):

Oh heck yes, this is exactly what was eluding me. I’ll have to take a look at that file name tomorrow and see where that is within the file structure. Thank you!!
No problem, for me the file was in \images\models\gameplay\interactables\grip\onehand\rectangle_small\postcard_01a\textures\gizeh

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

I was thinking this real world photo could be the inspiration for one of the sketches of Shanghai

Btw I wonder if this was a reference to this insert from Emperor's Tomb haha

I've made a color changing .mat & .cube that seem to work alright on the postcard & baseball card, I've attached them in the zip file

I'm doing another playthrough and screenshotting the journal as I go. I'm aiming to get pictures of pieces as they go in, crucially showing the sketches Indy does before he covers them with inserts. I'm not sure how far I'll get without a proper manual save option since if I miss one, I'd have to start over. If anyone knows any PC mods or trainers that enables quicksaving, let me know.

Very diligent work!

Hey all!

I'm excited to share what I've been working on in my spare time the last few weeks: A complete recreation of the journal in The Great Circle. I've done my best to get all the sketches in the proper order, leaving the correct amount of blank pages (some of the pages of the journal don't have sketches on them, only collectables).

The page order wasn't immediately obvious to me, as it's not always clear from the animation if you're flipping a page left or right. It seems I'll have to play again and pay attention to the order I unlock the sketches, but I'm not super concerned—depending on when things are found, the order would be variable anyway. Add to that there's no rule in real life that says you can't leave pages of a sketchbook blank, or skip pages and go back and fill them in later, so as long as they're roughly in the order of play I think I'm happy with it

Now, to start making the inserts! There are so many, I may not put all of them in the book, as I want to still be able to close it when I'm done
