As 'Raiders' was a pastiche of the serials of the 30s and 40s, if they'd called it 'Indiana Jones conquers the Martians' it would have made more sense.

Yes, but KOCS wasn't really like those 50s B-movies that Lucas quotes as inspiration. It was after all a standard Indy flick that is rooted in the old serials and follows the same structure of the old ones. A 50s martian b-movies are very different in terms of pacing, tone, structure from how the final movie came out.
