got a head casting in the other day and my 4x20 scope just arrived today .

looking at the pics and different versions people have done i still cant tell which is the correct end.

one end of the 4x20 scope has a knurled fitting and a longer shallow angled step and the other end has a steeper angled step.

my gut feeling is the longer less angular end but with the knurled part removed.

what do you think?

oh yeah i just rated this thread 5 stars :)

I've got a head as well and have been researching it. I'm pretty sure you want to use the large end, the one closest to your eye when using the scope. It kinda depends on if you got the right 4x20 scope though, where'd you get yours?

Have you thought about the one that Boba Fett uses for ESB and RotJ? It's an ASI Scope, I think that the ones sold by sidewinder are cast from a real ASI, surely he will sell you a resin cast of one :)

It's supposed to be an ASI scope from what I've found.

@Zorg: That's not the right scope. There shouldn't be a deliniation between the eyepeice and the body on the large end:

from what i can see from pics of the asi on tdh it does have a decline :confused

the ebay one is close enough for me.

Well, I think there are other issues with the known references of IG-88 (I've found all of three that were useful).

Take a look at the eyes in these two photos:

These are the two really good, common photos that show up all the time (the third is the one in the Visual Dictionary) just cropped to show the eyes.

Note the difference in the wall thickness between the two photos? Also, look at the top photo and see how it looks as if a tube has a nice, straight cut, giving sharp edges to the eyes. Look at the bottom photo - looks like that same edge has been rounded (and the wall thickness is thicker).

I'm wondering if part of the eyes were just attachments of some kind and the set/prop guys were still working on the thing between the time these photos were taken.

Seeing as I have little accurate reference to go on, I opted to find the cheapest scope I could find. I got this for $7.00 from DealExtreme:

If it's crap, well, then it will be used on some other project. Another alternative I found instead of scopes are Mini Maglites. They have a similar taper and could be a bargain basement alternative (especially if you have an old one in a toolbox):

In fact, for the third eye (in the back), I'm using a cheap flashlight that I have and just sticking it in there.

Gotta say I got a great casting from skaught (great turnaround, too) and am having fun with this project. Will post more photos of it soon.

Gene, just to clarify, its only the third rear facing eye i am trying to get opinions on in the thread.

it looks like we got the same scopes for that part.:thumbsup

as for the front ones :confused, hell i need to have a think about those.

just wish there was a clear photo of the ones we have.

maybe there are some hi rez pic whores out there that could share?

There are lots of variations of 4x20 scopes, but you're using the right part.
4x15's work as well. I tried a few different sizes (at least 3 different lengths). I'd have to check which length eyepiece I finally figured looked right.

The eyes are the same in all pics. It's just photo quality varies and makes them look slightly different. The eyes are not scopes.
I've been meaning to draw up some accurate eye blueprints, but I haven't had any time.

thanks chris, with or without the knurled part do you think?

Without. That's the only way it fits on a real flame tube (and it's defnitely not there in pics).
I'll double check mine and post measurements - have to dig out my IG-88 parts box.
