Ideas for electronics for props

I posted this in my pulse rifle counter thread. I'll post it again for those not into the whole shooting aliens thing:

Most of you folks know me because of my interest in Harry Potter props and replicas :love. Most of you don't know that my father is an electronics engineer with over 40-years experience (mostly in embedded systems).

He's decided to semi-retire, and he's been playing around with cool electronics props to do.

We're currently working on a rig for X-Wings, and the timer from Sliders. I'd love to hear other ideas for interesting electronics my dad could work on.

Here's something I've been trying to find to install in my various helmets: a small battery powered clock that doesn't require a button to display the time (red LEDs would rock). I know that no one would be able to see it but the costumer, but it sure would be nice to have :)

Easily programmable sound chip - Give it a 4 or 5 position rotary switch to select the sound effect and a trigger button to activate. Maybe a rheostat for volume & on/off. Get me that loaded with 4 or 5 star trek TOS scanner sounds for under $50 & you got a deal!

Such things can be had easily enough for $20 - sound programmed via USB and up to 5 sounds (max 200 seconds total) from the ones I've seen.

I could do with some programable rigs for some of my Tron discs for the blade and C ring light sequences like the battle flicker and startup sequences. I've seen some examples using an Arduino mini that were cool. I have soldering experiance but I'm no good at designing circuits.

I'm surprised that no one has come out with a stargate model kit. Something at about 30cm (12") in diameter would be good or to scale with action figures.

how about a lighted working stargate and remote DHD to operate it.
