Hypothetical recast question... (genuine concern)

hey all,

i have a jango fett blaster cast in solid resin. the basic story is that a friend gave me it because i wanted a project to try out some painting.

i foun dit in his basment in a random junk box, he didnt cast it, and has no idea where it came from. his guess is that it was part of a collection he bought as stock for his business, and he chucked it in that random box while sorting the valueable from the junk.

so heres the question. after doing a bit of research, i have reason to believe its a recast of a rubies or similar costume piece. now my plan originally was to paint it as an easy project, and then sell it in order to fund other hobbie material.

so my question is this. the item is a recast, but i didnt recast it and innocently want to sell it in order to pay for meterials for my next project.

where do i stand in this? does that make me a recast supporter? would you guys hypothetically buy something that you knew to be a recast IF there was an honest story behind it? or are recasts an outright wrong no matter how oblivious the seller is to it.

im new to this and this area fascinates me.

If it's a recast of a commercially available piece, why bother selling it? I don't think it would gain you that much money, because people can go out and buy stuff like that. Is it worth the potential doubt you could bring upon yourself? Not that I don't believe your story, but the minute that goes for sale, it's tainted if someone recognizes what it's a cast of. I'd use it for a fun practice piece and keep it, in case you need a blaster sometime.

im not necessarily looking to gain on it, just keep a circulation. otherwise ill end up with a room full of stuff and no money haha! seriously though, it cost me nothing, so its not about profit.

i see what you mean though. best just stay out of it completley.

ok, back on hypothetical... say i hadnt done the research and GENUINELY didnt know it was a recast, tried to sell it in the JY.

what then?

Well, you did say that you wanted to sell it to pay for materials for another project. I'm still thinking you won't get much, if anything for it. Even if the ethics weren't an issue because you didn't make it, I still say you could just as easily toss it out or give it away after painting if you really don't want it. If you do try and sell it, I guess the worst that could happen is that no one wants to buy a recast costume piece or questions where you got it. But as a newer member, I can tell you that you don't want to gain a reputation as someone who sells recasts.

Welcome to the prop collecting hobby!!! :lol

In all seriousness, I think that if the buyer recognized it as a recast and called you on it, there might be some bad feelings. In my opinion, you did the right thing in doing as much research as possible. And you can never go wrong being completely honest and providing full disclosure. That will serve you better in the long run than anything else. And you may find somebody who is willing to purchase the blaster for exactly what it is.

cool. will do that then.

must say im glad ive picked up bits from this forum, i hadnt even considered recasting etc until i read about it on this forum.

then again i guess every hobby or subculture has its dark side.

yeah see thats what i was thinking. surely if the seller was honest, didnt claim it to be anything other than it is, then that would be fine.

the only other item i have that id be willing to sell or trade which i dont know the origin of is a lifesize freddy kruger head. i bought that, as you say, for what it is.

the seller at no point claimed it to be anything than a dummy freddy head that looked cool.

yeah, THAT was my concern. i wouldnt want one piece ruining my reputation when im so new to the hobby, cos i enjoy it here.

also, i wouldnt want anyone to question the authenticity of some of my real props/autographs/collectibles based on a genuine error.

like someone else said above, it pays to do research to make sure youre well informed to avoid accusations.
