How to Train Your Dragon is awesome!

by the way, the toys are rubbish

I was really wanting a good toothless figure, but he's £10 and crap. oooh look, hold his legs together and his wings move, big deal, not poseable. boooo

She was the strongest of the "old Viking way", and I thought she represented all of the good virtues (strong, brave, fierce, loyal) of their Viking culture. Hiccup was the village joke, who had to hide what he knew about dragons. He didn't have the confidence to tell anyone, but Toothless trusted him

I don't think Hiccup did any explaining since it was Toothless who was attempting to shake her off to her death till she apologized.

A cheap movie gimmick, used to save film. Either that or we could have had a montage and I hate montages. Really the film could have been two films.

What did you think of Nim's Island?

A viking culture that this film sets up to be completely changed by the end of the movie, rendering her 'old viking way' entirely pointless. None of those good virtues come into play during the movie. She doesn't teach Hiccup about being strong, brave, fierce or loyal. She's just there because he needs a love interest and someone who will need saving.

What the heck is Nim's Island?

What the heck is Nim's Island?

A film about a girl who lives with her Dad on an uncharted island. She reads an adventure book series written by an author named Alex. She assumes the author is male, and when her Dad goes missing at sea ends up coaxing the author to the Island. Turns out the author is Jody Foster who suffers from agoraphobia, who secretly lives through her leading male character. Just wondered if you had seen it, what you thought about how the female characters were portrayed in it.

Well....my four year old love's his dragon toys, and I have had almost as much fun playing with them and him having our own little dragon adventure. I guess they made them for the children:sleep

Just saw this movie... my verdict: good flick! Entertaining, not too childish. Animation and voice work very well done. Most importantly, good story. :thumbsup

Just a heads up: Jewel once posted a thread taking Pixar to task for its lack of strong female role models. He argued with all comers about the injustices of a movie company producing product in a patriarchal society. He has neither a daughter or a girl friend - at least at the time of that thread - but felt appointed to speak out for all womyn kind and never did grow tired of it.

I believe I observed at that time that his ideal fantasy animated heroine probably resembled Andrea Dworkin in a strap-on.:eek:eek

Just attempting to warn you guys what you might be stepping into.

I had no problem with HTTYD. I actually went to see it again tonight. I watched the Astrid apology scene closer this time. Astrid tracks Hiccup down because she thought he was getting specialized training. Jealousy is cliche, but she didn't just whine about it to her friends.. she chased him down to get a piece of it. She's not weak in the least. It was only when she was running back to blow Toothless's cover did they do what what most people would done, they stalled her with the hopes of convincing her not to. I noticed no weakness in Astrid. In fact, when the Vikings set sail with Toothless she put Hiccup in the position of admitting he was weak for not killing Toothless. She wasn't making a powerplay, she was helping him to convince Hiccup to take action and save Toothless.

Well, if you want to limit your female character's role solely for the purpose to benefit the hero's role, I guess she's even worse than I realize. It sounds like that this is all it takes to make a female character important by taking away all that she worked hard to accomplish, having a cheater be chosen instead of her, making all her beliefs wrong, reducing her to a love interest who tells the hero what he already knows, have none of her strengths come into play in the last battle and have her be put into a situation where she has to be rescued and left out for the remainder of the battle where all she does is watch and fret. :sleep

Very entertaining for adults and children alike. I love how far cgi has come in animations, and the use of 3D was not just an add in to the plot. If you have children use them as an excuse to go see it, otherwise go and enjoy it yourselves!
There was a very lame group of role playing medieval re-creationists out front of the theater I went to that were beating on each other with boffer swords. Almost as funny as some of the shows characters.

The movie was great. Enjoyed the story it was pretty well told. The animation was amazing and it was nice to relax and enjoy the flick.

For those who have their heartbroken over Astrids role, please. For one Hiccup wasn't a cheater, he had a gift and it took him a while to figure it out and Astrid didn't understand. Some people will never be satisfied unless the roles are reversed.

Go grab a glass of wine and throw in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and we'll send over some tissues and ice cream.

I would love to see a couple of the props in this film made!
I am already working on the dragon rider armor Hiccup wore for my son for Halloween. And I am looking for reference material for the dragon book and Hiccup's Toothless Journal.

We took my son to see this for his birthday (he turns 4 Wednesday) and we all loved it. I think this movie is easily in my top 3 all time favorites now.

Actually, that's not outside of the realm of possibility. The Vikings occupied the northern part of Scotland for centuries. There are plenty of places that still bear Viking names. You land, you take local brides, you take on local customs etc.
My clan (Gunn) is a Viking clan, named from the Viking leader's grandson Gunni. We hail from the north of Scotland, in the Caithness District. And we don't know where exactly the island is at in relation to the Sami northlands or Scotland. But I think we're looking for too deep into this bit and they had Scottish accents because Craig and Gerard are Scots.

I would never lie to you.
*hugs*

Saw it, liked it.

A lot.

You and me, we're still pals, pal.

The stereo was better than Avatar; the flying scenes, especially! And Hiccup & Toothless are way more endearing than any of the characters in the former.

Anyone else notice the flux capacitor?

My daughter got my son a Gronkle action figure for his birthday yesterday and it is broken already and the paint is coming off. Total piece of turd. In the packaging they only put one of his two wings on him, you put on the other wings. It doesn't stay, my son tripped while running with Gronkle at the park and the wing flew off of the body, 10 minutes of searching in the wood chips to find it.

He hadn't even had the thing 10 hours and there was a section of it's belly paint that is worn off.

Maybe you got a bad one? My son has had his for over five weeks now, and still holding up. Yes the wings come off easy, etc. but paint is good, and he is four years old, so they get played with. If you bring it back and tell them you need to exchange it because of the problems you mentioned that should be no problem. In fact, I would reccomend taking a replacement with you to the service desk, and if they push back, ask to see a CSM, or Assistant Manager. If you still have any problems let me know, or PM me and I'll make sure your good to go.;)
