How to make a head armature cheap

Ok I have been wanting to buy a sculpting armature for quite a while but just couldnt bring myself to pay $65.00+ So I decided to go about it another way. Heres what I did and what is needed:

Materials:
1 roll of good duct tape
1 plastic bag, or plastic cling wrap
Cardboard
Approx 8lbs of plaster

Price of materials - $4.00 duct tape - $10.00 plaster - Your fiance coming home just after your head is all duct taped up and saying "Ok what kind of sick crap are you into now!!!" PRICELESS!!!

Steps:

1. The first thing I did was to take a plastic bag and put it over my head..... MAKE SURE TO PUNCH BREATHING HOLES FIRST!!! and eye holes to see unless you have a partner helping you.

2. Wrap you head in duct tape the same way you would do a duct tape dummy, I did three layers of duct tape to make sure it would hold the weight of the plaster.

3. Using safety scissors cut the duct tape shell off your head and tape over the cut area.

4. Now using cardboard make a tube the approx. size of your neck and attach it to the duct tape head

5. Once that is done find a wooden dowel or in my case a kitchen utensil and run it through the cardboard tube, this acts as a hanger so you dont have to rely on the head standing on its own while the plaster dries, which would result in a flat spot. Now hand the whole thing between two chairs

6. Now mix up your plaster, I did four batches of plaster so that I could let each layer dry before adding the next. Pour it in to the head and let it dry completely. I let mine dry for 24 hours before removing the shell.

7. Once its all dry just remove the duct tape and cardboard and you should have a decent scultping armature If you need a smooth armature all you will need to do is sand it down, or just leave it wrinkly like mine.

Well hope this helps someone, and now since I have no more excuses i'm going to start sculpting.

Could this be altered into a budget lifecast?
It seems simple enough to work for soemone as artistically challenged as myself.

lol just love the comment of "Your fiance coming home just after your head is all duct taped up and saying "Ok what kind of sick crap are you into now!!!" PRICELESS!!!"

Well just did my dummy tape suit and with my other loving half warping me up for a hour... and then my mom coming over with the face. But very good idea and cheap to do, Ive always Try to do a rough guess as ive been looking for a head armature for quite a while.

I would think that you could do this as a full body armature but if its any indication the head I made weighs over 8lbs!!!!

i am trying to buy mine from monstermakers but they dont seem to ship to canada. bummer as they have a delux latex mask making kit there i would love to get. figure if im willing to spend 1000 on a kit they would be willing to ship. oh well. its tough to find a kit here in canada.
