What would a fully operational R2-D2 run now a days? I know we have some incredible R2 builders on these forums.

$6k?

thanks in advance

depends on what you mean by "fully functional" and what the r2 is made of. Mostly metal? fiberglass? resin? wood?

Plus, by functional - do you mean 1) lights, 2) sound, 3) remote control function 4) turning head? 5) opening and closing vents 6) motion sensors 7) opening and closing vents 8) 2-3-2 conversion ... the list goes on and on.

A fully loaded - and I mean - ALL metal -with operating everything can run all the way up to 40,000. It takes years to get the parts necessary to get an all metal r2d2.

I typically tell new builders that if they plan to buy all the parts and have it RC then plan for between 4K & 8K. The spread depends on materials you use. Of course, many have been build for less but most of them are scratch built. There are more and more cool gadgets coming out though that builders are adapting to make RC, lights and sound cheaper and still get good results.

thanks... I

wasn't sure which "options" were available and to what degree the droids were being built now a days!

I spend hours looking at all the functions other r2's have over mine... it just drives me nuts... Raising and lowering periscopes - one person even has a fire extinguisher built into his...

For just Remote control function - I think you'd be looking around 5000. That may or may not include lights.

Again - there also aren't many built r2's out there for sale - so it also really depends on the seller too.

I collected all metal parts for about 2 years and without the things you can buy at any time, like batteries, some electronics, remote control, motors, etc, I have over $12k in it so far.

Still haven't begun to build it as I'm frankly worried about the time commitment.

Watto has them cheap... :lol

Yes, Those are R3-D3 and R3-A2 from Star Tours. But only in the California and Florida versions. Not in Paris or Tokyo.

check out my blog, and read through the faq if you have time.

There are SOOO many variations on building materials and techniques, that it's almost an impossible question to answer. Also, your building ethos will drive costs. Does he have to be club spec? Do you just want something that "looks like" r2 to the casual viewer? All metal? Wood? Fiberglass? Do you need a metal dome???

Your question is very similar to asking "I want to buy a car. How much will it cost me?" There are an infinite number of variables that go into making a car, and there are TONS of decisions you would need to make to figure out what kind of car you would need. Same thing for R2

Another thing to consdier is tools. If you don't have many tools, you can expect to spend another chunk of change getting them. I went nuts on my guy, and probably spent upwards of 20k from start to finish. And worth every frickin' penny. But I went "Cadillac" in every aspect I could think of... and he STILL isn't perfect.

I think if you set your mind to it, played your cards right, were REALLY resourceful, and had a lot of time and patience, you could put together a respectable R2 for 2k. A LOT of stars would need to line up perfectly for that to happen, but it can be done. That assumes you want some degree of remote control, use resin and wood parts, rattle can spraypaints, not a lot of electronics, and will cut some corners on detail and accuracy. Heck, now that I think about it, you could probably do it for a little cheaper.

Hope that helps a bit.

this one will cost you ten grand.......

Seriously though...if you want all metal it's going to run you close to 5000 or more just for parts. If you go the styrene route you can get one way cheaper.

good luck!

I'm surprised you'd be willing to let that go for 10,000. With all the extra stuff that you put in, 1) periscope 2) r/c vents on the dome and body 3) r/c holo projector 4) radar 5) fire extinguisher thingy.. etc... (not to mention - RC in general, lights and sound)...

that seems awfully cheap for such a complete package. Excellent work though... I wish I could upgrade my r2 to have all those features... (y)thumbsup

It was really a joke....I have more in it now...like a cpu arm that extends and all the little stuff that comes out of the dome now moves left and right as well as up and down.

But if you have 10 grand to spare...we can talk :lol

The AA flatpacks are a great way to go for the budget minded. Really nice stuff. Though each material you work with has advantages and disadvantages.

I think the best advice anyone ever gave to me before starting my R2 was this: Research, research, research!

You've made a good start by asking the money question, but the next step is to dig a level deeper. Join the R2 builders club, read some blogs, look at some pics, etc. Then let the fun begin!

A reasonable approach.

Only use aluminum where is shows. I've seen a ton of people get seduced by the all aluminum route, only to take a step back.
