How do you create a case-hardened paint effect?

Does anyone know how to paint or otherwise treat resin to attain a case-hardened look? Other than careful airbrushing, I'm thinking maybe applying variegated metal leaf and treating that with gun blue.

But that's a stab in the dark and if someone knows a better way, I'd appreciate the help.

LOTS of wet sanding to get the resin prepped and airbrushing the paint of your choice is your best bet. I know you said besides aribrushing, but there really isn't a way to get it to look like the real thing without sending the resin out and having it annodized.
