Hoth Rebel Pilot Jacket: Best Source?

You CAN get approved with the GE jacket as long as the pockets do not show...oh, as pockets.....because the originals had no side pockets.
I actually don’t like them as a costume piece, they do not have the correct sheen, but the price is right for many people.

There is a difference from sets to on location in Norway. Look at Mark's half dressed scene in the film vs the Norway scenes. There is an apparent difference in layers. Its been said the actors wore their own cothing in norway due to the thin costumes via Alinger's book.

Also the nature of the nylon used gives the look of layers as well. Here im only wearing a t shirt and the coveralls under the jacket.

Right but what I am trying to express is a warning to cosplayers that when attempting this costume is that the jacket Mark wears in Norway is made oversized to fit the bulk layers underneath. He is not wearing the same costume jacket on the Dagobah set because the jacket would look huge and look like boy wearing his dad's jacket.

If we assume the cosplayer wants to buy/make only one jacket, they need to decide what ultimate look they want to match.
Do they want:

• The bulky, puffed-up look of running around Hoth?
• The slim look of crashing on Dagobah?
• Or an idealized Hybrid look?

There is no wrong answer. This is simply a friendly warning that if you have a certain look in mind, you need to ensure that the jacket you are making or buying is designed and constructed in that way. If you want to look like Luke on Dagobah, it is fairly fitted with no bulk. But if the place you buy it from is making their jacket based on photos of Mark in the snow in Norway, you will be disappointed.

It's like this... If you want a Return of the Jedi lightsaber and you buy an accurate Hero lightsaber, but then watch a scene and see the V2 hilt and feel disappointed because that is what you actually wanted. It is because you did not do your homework before hand. They did not know that different props were used to represent the same item. Same with the jacket... different costumes were used to represent the same jacket.

So to sum up... Decide what you want, do your homework, make your best choice. (applies to any purchase).

It’s a clear rubber coating? I always thought the snowspeeder jackets were made of waxed cotton, like Barbour jackets, or a semi-shiny nylon material.

The jackets are so shiny in some photos that I think those had been made from a rubber-coated nylon, not just regular nylon fabric. I once made myself a jacket in such a material and I think it looked right.

That does not rule out that the possibility of there having been different jackets of different materials, though.

Its shiny Nylon with no lining. There never was any mention of an other material in Brandon's book. Anovos made theirs from nylon.

You also have to remember that like any fabric, the overall appearance such as drape, sheen, texture, etc... can be varied based on the thickness of the fiber, if it is a blend, how it is woven, etc. So you just cannot go into a fabric store and grab any orange nylon fabric (even if the shade of orange is spot on) and expect it to match what is on screen. Once again, you got to do your homework and you cannot assume those who make jackets are doing their homework.

The upside to a bigger company with a license like Anovos is having resources. They milled and dyed their own nylon for their jacket and I believe they even had access to originals. And it's cheaper then everywhere else. These other sources are stuck with buying off the self fabric and using images as references.


Its important to do research as Mara Jade's Father has stated. These other sources do not have the resources Anovos had. Make sure the jacket you buy is what you are after, a nice replica or a dead on screen accurate jacket?

I really do want one. that’s not a rank badge, it’s more of an ID device. Not sure if it ever established what they are in the SWU. Luke wears a standard three dot Navy Commander rank on the other side of his jacket. See it on the left side of the photo? now it should be said that it is not always on the costume jacket. Once again it just there during certain filming locations.

Also look how high the chin strap goes. Also note the way the strap runs through the chin cup, you see black in the middle. When he is in the speeder, the strap runs through so that you see a lot of the white of the chin cup.

I’ve often wondered why he had the hooks. He is the only pilot that has them. I wonder if they had some other idea for the costume that they did not follow through on like the face mask for the helmet in A New Hope. He’s also the only other pilot to wear a leather belt as everyone else wears the standard gray pilot belt.

I have no idea as I often wondered why. I always thought that maybe it fit better over the jacket that way. It should also be noted that it is also backwards on the publicity photos of Mark in the x-wing costume for anh that you see in things like the visual dictionary and is often the source used by Hasbro for a lot of their pilot figures. Which is a shame because that photo has a lot of other errors too.

You will also notice that in different scenes sometimes he has a paint chip missing from the rebel logo on the right side when looking at him (on his left) and other times not. Could be a different helmet, could be just that it happen sometime between shooting different locations. Same with the visor. Reports are that the visors are static. I don’t think we ever see Luke raise his visor, you simply see it raised after the crash. So it could be possible they had at least two different helmets for him.

Thought on the backwards vest.
Since the bottom strap(s) are moved to the front adjusting the tension at the waist is easier.

I honestly think it has to do with the jacket. The back of the vest is much larger when compared to the front. I think that if you wore the vest the "A New Hope" way (true front with the adjustment strap on the back) it would look too small and not cover as much of the chest when you have that jacket on. Just my guess.

I keep my pilot Luke on display. It one of my favorites out side of vader.

It consists of
Anovos Jacket and coveralls
Darman props belt
Custom Props chest box and vest
Welding gloves
The boots are chinese

I still need flairs, a proper flight cap and blaster.

I hope you all don't mind my bumping this thread, but it's a topic I've been pondering myself for a few months now. I have an Imperial Boots x-wing setup that's pretty nice, but I'm not certain I want to jump in on their Hoth jacket - I'm not super happy with the collar shape and the material color seems to be way too red; there's one for sale in the junkyard right now for reference, plus their own stock images lead me to believe it'll be more red-orange rather than burnt orange/lighter than the flightsuit. Does anybody here have one?

I reached out to A&J Projects, coincidentally they just posted some pictures yesterday of a build that seems pretty spot-on. I'd go the GE route if I ever made it to the park, but who knows when that could happen. I don't want to cheap out and get something that isn't durable/accurate, but I'm also not sure I want to drop $350 on just the jacket that some vendors are asking.

I agree, that color is off. That is assuming they got the flight suit color right.
