High Plains Drifter

Yup - have seen Indy's coat. His photos apparently do not do it justice. On another forum, IM explained that it is a size too large for the display mannequin, which prevents it from displaying properly with the proper fit at the waist. So it doesn't look like a true frock coat. More like a looser fitting rench coat.

I'm also not sure if it is the best material and color. On my monitor, it looks beige, not grey.

I've heard it suggested that the original may have been oil cloth, or other similar material as used with dusters, or other long, riding coats. I'd concur with this assessment; that the material is likely a more sooth, almost tent-like material.

Magnoli's appears softer, and to have more texture; almost like a rough-out leather or suede. Though I'm pretty sure IM can vary his base material per request.

Our coat is made of a heavy cotton canvas, which I think is perfect for this. The distressing we gave to the one we photographed is probably what's giving you that impression of a suede finish. But as you say, we can make this in any material, any color, any level of distressing you want.

And yeah, it's really a shame we didn't make this for a smaller guy, but suffice it to say he was very happy with this coat (so much so that he ordered a second one!).

Kind regards,
Indy

Thanks, Indy M... Hope my post didn't come across as negative, or too critical.

If you all do more or have more shots, post them up. Your's is about the only replica being offered, and you have a solid reputation.

Hi,

The coat worn by Eastwood in HPD is in fact a made to measure medium weight grey cotton twill. It's not period accurate being heavily influenced by the period (early 1970's )
It's a fashionable stylish outer garment made to flatter Eastwood's physique by the costume makers working for the film, probably with an eye looking back to Carlo Simi's work on the Leone movies.

He also wore a very similar coat 12 years later in Pale Rider, changed the colour (brown) thicker fabric & altered the angle of the pockets but basically the same design. Mr. Eastwood knows what suits him.

Don't expect to find it for sale & the copies I've seen are way off mark (much like the HPD hats ) but if you have a sewing machine & can get hold of some grey 6 -8 oz cotton twill fabric then it should be straight foreward enough to knock one up.

Same for the hat, best to buy a simple black felt cowboy hat with a 3 3/4 - 4 inch raw edge brim rather than some inaccurate copy, then steam it into the desired shape . The hatband is easily made too with a simple strip of leather.

Love posts like this (truly).

Seems the poster created an account simply to respond to this thread, leaving me to wonder - simply an avid fan, or someone "in the know"...?

WOW, things sure do move fast around here....:D............in answer to your wonderment; yes & no.

I think I simply had stopped revisiting the thread back in 2012,and sort of "moved along".

But excellent information and welcome to the RPF (three years later!)...! :cool.

Yep, time travel ain't what it used to be...:lol thanks for your welcome, you can pop back into your TARDIS now ..:rolleyes

I hope you don't mind me adding a search for the hat to this thread, since I thought you seem to have done some research into the costume. Does anyone know what make it is? I'll need to find some good reference pics, but I swear I have a hat around here somewhere that could be worked into a decent match.
I didn't see this movie hat listed, but this site may be a great place to start:

He had almost the same hat in two mules..also he carried a 7 1/2 colt not his usual 5 1/2 ..but he did have his usual anderson rig ..

It's been a few years since anyone added to this thread so I thought I'd share a pic of my version of Clint’s hat from HPD since it's on topic despite being a little late to this party. If you're interested in getting one check out my page on Facebook "Screencapped Hats". I offer it in 50/50 beaver/rabbit mix and 100% pure beaver fur felt. All handmade including the leather hatband.
