HELP Needed - Post-Bound Book

Hey everyone, as many of you know i'm a prop-replica novice - i've never made a prop replica myself, but bought them. Anyways, you've all probably guessed aswell that i have a penchant for book replicas.

Anyways i need some help, i've seen Post-Bound book replica's before, i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to make one? I really want to make a Hocus Pocus Replica, but make it post-bound so i can move pages around etc.

Any help would be appreciated, but a detailed step by step would be a god send lol, thanks xx

Thanks for the help :) I've seen this tutorial before, it's really good, except it's missing pictures and the end result is quite messy (look at the spine) but thanks so much anyways :):)

Ahh, sorry, I wasn't sure if you had read it or not. :) I'm pretty good with book-binding, but I've never done a post-bound book before.

I hope you find something that helps you! :thumbsup

I've done a lot of these and they are really very easy. Do you know the basics of making book covers? i.e. cutting (cardboard or whatever you're using), outer covering and inner covering......

Well, you cut the /cardboard/ to the size you want your book to be. Then out of something a little thinner (but as strong) than what you used for the cover, cut another strip 3/4 to 1 inch wide and the height of your book. Since I like to have the posts that holds the book together covered, I add another piece about 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide. These widths are just "for instance" can be whatever looks good to you and/or the style of your book. You don't have to add the extra strip, I just think it's a nicer finish. Line up and make holes for the posts in the wider strips.

Lay out the outer covering good side down. Lay the /cardboard/ cover and strips out side by side and adhere them to the outer covering by whatever means you are using--glue, iron on adhesive, sewing.....I use a couple of bamboo skewers to space the stripes about 1/8 inch apart, but do a test to see if this is going to be enough room to allow them to fold over. Adhere the inner covering and bind the holes for the posts.

Paper is cut, the holes punched to line up with what you put on the strips and stacked and the covers positioned over it all. Put in the post screws, close the inner strip, close the book.

I'm not too good at illustrating, but I've made a stab at it. Hope it helps some. Good luck with your project!

Oh, didn't illustrate, but if you want the "spine" bound, make a strip of thin card the height of the book and cover with the cover material. Make it wide enough to enclose depth of the page stack and come over past the post screw holes. Line up and make holes for the post and position this strip in place before you put on the covers.

Wow, thanks so much Shylaah! This is an amazing contribution to the project, and it will in doubt doubt come in handy :) I was wondering if i could possibly PM you with some pics of the book cover i'm trying to achieve, as i need a few more things covered and a bit more detail on some things?

There are many ways to do a post bound book, many different ways to put on the spine. The request was for one done along the lines of the Book of Shadows from Charmed.

I did up a sample book, took some pictures, and made a tutorial for this kind of book with the exception of the curved spine. To do that, I would make the spine from three layers of poster board, or card stock, tag board, even cereal or cracker boxes. Use some wet type glue, like Elmer's, spread it on thick, stack the layers, wrap them in plastic and secure them around a cylindrical object of the degree of curve you seek and let them dry in that position.

Also, on the Charmed book, I couldn't really tell if the extension strips holding the spine to the covers was under or over the material used to cover the book. Because it was easier and faster, I put the spine strips on over, but if I wanted them under, I would use an under liner to assembly the covers, and the spine--cut flush to the edges. Then glue them up at the grooves, and after that dries, work on gluing on the covers and the inner liners.

Post Bound Book Construction

Need a couple more pics for the post and pages, but basically it's finished...
