help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylum

im looking to make this from scratch, or maybe but/trade for already made peices. has anyone made this version before? next to the jack nicholson joker this one is my favorite. the way he acts always makes me laugh and want to be him more. ive never done anything like this before, ive done some jack sparrow stuff and my ash williams from evil dead. i need help with this. ill start with something easy, the coat. its as we all know purple with light purple strips, on the back near the shoulders is a solid purple "patch" and tails that stick out. weathering will be no problem, i know how to from the said costumes ive done before. any help starting would be great, thank you.

I'd love to see that done. I absolutely loved all the costumes from Arkham Asylum especially the scarecrow.

Great choice! Anytime Mark Hamill voices Joker it's going to be great! have fun, Joker is a great character to work on. I myself am starting on a classic DCU Joker. Good luck fellow rouge. I shall be watching this with great interest.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

i went to jo anns fabric andsaw something i could use. what color would you say the darker purple is? violet or just dark purple?

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

Well I picked up the AA Joker figure and it would seem to me that it's more of a dark purple. If you can find one of those figures I'd suggest you do the same for decent reference. As for the tails I'd use very stiff interfacing. That way they will stick out as they should. you can also find spats at http://www.gentlmensemporium.com I think they're around $25.00 or so. not counting shipping.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

sounds good, the material which ill post a pics when i get out of my culinanry class. now since it seems there is no purple on purple pinstriping material ill have to do something else. could spray paint work? if i tape the jacket and pants up to the width i like could i just spray paint lines? still looking for the shoes. cant figure out what i should look for. also with the tails how do i do the interfacing? im new at this so im trying to learn all that i can.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

the other thing is the jokers belt buckle i cant make out the picture on it, skull maybe?

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

You could also try using a wire frame to keep the tails sticking out as well.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

With my first run on my Dk Joker pants I had to lay down thin painters tape on the fabric before they where sewn then I used Design master hyacinth 762 spray paint so paint the fabric before you sew it. But in time the paint may fade unless you can find a way to seal it. It is a good suggestion to use wire framing for the tails but I don't think it's fully needed because there are very very ferm interfacings that can be ironed to the fabric do to the adhesive and you will find that at Jo ann's. As for the belt buckle I can't really make it out either, not even on the figure. But I to am thinking with the mind of the Joker it would be a skull of some type. Just paint that gold or even gold leaf it. I found a pair of shoes for my clasic that are very close to this one at Ross Dress for Less, so if you have one in your town go there and see what you can find. You can also paint them to match.

Mine was loosely based on arkham asylum.
I have a straightjacket I was going to wear, but the regular outfit looked cooler!
I did a prosthetic from the scream team...

What about taking a lighter pinstripe material and dying it? The lighter stripes will appear a lighter purple while the darker ones will appear to be a darker purple.

I believe wire would give the desired effect with the tails, if that's what you are looking for. The tailcoat pattern, looks like a regular tailcoat... but with slightly different shoulders and pockets sewn in the front.

The shirt (to jump ahead) looks like a slightly modified chef shirt... tighter of course... with a dress shirt collar. http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=1682574

I'm only suggesting the interfacing because wire may eventurally work it's way out of the fabric and cause it to come apart. And yeah perhaps as said by darthgordon dying lighter pinstripe fabric can be another way to go as well.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

thanks for all the help. i ordered those spats, should be here soon. thejoker, whats is the name and style number (if there is one) of the shoes you are going to get for ur classic? darthgorden, great idea, back to jo ann's for more shopping fun. ill see what they have, i mostly looked when i was there in the suit material to try to make it feel and look very "suit-y" i think i just made a word. also its funny you said it looks like a chefs coat, im in college for my culinary degree and i never put two and two together. i may have a extra i could rework, or even buy a pattern.

I'm not too sure about getting polyester to fade... at least not fade and look correct. You'd probably be better off getting a white, natural fiber gloves and dying them. Do not attempt to dye polyester... that cannot be done with standard dyes.

Something like this:

Amazon.com: White Stitched Cotton Gloves-Pair: Clothing

would be inexpensive and give you the stitched look that I think I see I the gloves. If there is no stitched look, there are also white, cotton parade gloves available without stitching.

Re: help in making my first costume from scratch. the joker from Batman: Arkham Asylu

i like the stiching on them, makes they look old timey like the tails. now the only thing to look for is the bowtie and the flower. also makeup and a chin prostetic

Where are you located? I could possibly help you out on prosthetics.
