Help Identify Fifth Element Grenade Dial

Mutant-Enemy

Sr Member
Greetings.
As some of you may know I am currently in the process of having a CAD model made of my screen used 5E "Mangalore" Grenade with the hopes of having it replicated for a run of them down the road.
I have it on good confidence that some of you out there may be able to positively identify the dial at the top of the grenade so that we can source it rather than have it machined.
Take a look at the pics below of the dial and please feel free to chime in with any pertinent info you may have.

Thanks for looking!

for sure it is a 10 {posible more depending on the numbers in the window} turn potentiomer dial.
dont know the brand, every one revolution advancesses the number in the window by one. the leaver locks it in the set position.
try Newark electronics .

Looks like the old TOS phaser dial assembly. I bought a crapload of them from an electronics reclamation yard and they had the same arrangement. Sold the last of them 3 years ago so I don't have a picture.

Thanks everyone! (You crack me up Nex)

I will give Newark a try!

Also, I have it on good confidence that this dial is

identical in function to the one found on the Alien motion tracker

(the one based on the Panasonic Ranger 505 portable TV)

just a different manufacturer, material, and size.

Tried Newark and here is the closest they had:
VISHAY SPECTROL 021-1-11 Shaft Diameter:0.25"

Close but no cigar...

I believe I've found what you're looking for:

600_Potentiometer-Ten-Turn-Knob-Small-Turns-Counting-Dial.jpg

28 mm diameter body = 1.1"

At $35 a set, pretty pricey... I'd try to finagle the name of the manufacturer out of the customer service dept., or barring that, just buy one and see if it's stamped or otherwise appears on the packaging or warranty.

Good luck with your project - that grenade sure is purdy!!! :thumbsup

I identified this piece years ago as I wanted to make a replica myself but never had dimensions for the main body.

The part youre looking for is sold by RS Components, a UK based electronics parts supplier, and the part number is stock number 509-973.

http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/searchBrowseAction.html?method=searchProducts&searchTerm=509-973

I've actually got a bag of 3-4 of them sitting here in front of me as I type this.

Yep - an Inverter Drive Supermarket customer rep sent me the same link. If one orders 25 dials, the price comes down to $18 each.

Feels good to find the right part - glad to have confirmation from a veteran member! :)

Maybe it's just me, but the one that's on the actual grenade appears to have grooves in the flat surface where the window with the numbers is, and in the two that are linked they appear to me smooth and not grooved. A minor difference even if it is true.

Good eye!
I will go out on a limb and atribute those "grooves" to a whole lot of wear and tear.
It's been on my mind ever since I recieved the grenade and was told that it had been stored in a box somewhere...
I figure that amongst the three owners that it has had that it's been handled quite a bit (pulled dramatically from the sheath so that those spikes pop out...they certainly look that way anyway)
I can't imagine how many times that dial has been spun and played with and...who knows? It may have been well used before it was even mounted on the grenade.
Suffice it to say that i'm looking forward to properly displaying it when all is said and done...which I don't think it ever has been.
