Help from APH6 owners

wondering if I could ask a favour from APH6 lid holders.
I just bought a helmet via evil bay - allegedly size LARGE as stated in the advert. I was really happy cos not only was it a size LARGE, but it came with the correct ramshorn attachment too.

however, having received it - it looks really small

although it fits my big 61 cm circ. noggin, it does look really small. I put it next to my DP CA TIE and although in prfile it matches up, from the front it looks smaller

what I was wanting help on is:

(1) any1 with dimensions of a APH6 size LARGE
(2) were the actual helmets cut in half and widened underneath the mohawk?
(3) is it just that all fligth helmets are meant to be snug anyways?

mroe pics to come - my pc is crashign whenever I load up pics at the mo' - British Telecoms be damned!!!

TIE helmets are widened, easy to do since they where vac formed, same with most of the x-wing helmets as well.
Vacced helmets are usually pulled over the outside of the helmet so they will be sized up a small amount.

I believe that real helmets are supposed to fit snug so they will look small.

I have asked this question in the forum before, and got the answer:
Okay, ear to ear of my size large APH is ~10".
This was measured inside but the helmet material thickness is less than 1/64".

Of course, the ears is a place where the helmet bulges out but is not where any add-ons go. ;)

No actual APH-6B helmets were used in the movies -- only vaccuformed ABS casts of a modified helmet or modified cast of a helmet.
It is built from vaccuformed left and right halves that were joined together with a long strip of sheet plastic on top of the mohawk. Then a front endcap, visor and chin cup were installed.
I believe that the width of the X-wing pilots' helmet is true to the width of the original APH-6B.

The TIE fighter pilots' helmet was cobbled together from X-wing helmet shells and Stormtrooper face place after the other helmets were designed.
While the X-wing helmet has a mohawk strip of around 5 cm width, the TIE fighter pilot's mohawk strip is around 3 cm wider to account for the width of the face plate.
That is why your TIE - fighter pilot helmet is wider.

many time you can look under the visor housing at the center front location and it will say what size it is. They will be raised letters if yours has this.

thanks for answers guys.

mine measures 9.5 inches ear to ear - and its an old helmet that came with no ear cushions. Thats close enough to ~10 inches

yep - i realised that the actual helmets werent used, meant vac formed versions of the helmet. think it must be as div6 was saying that it got sized up one in the vac forming process.

ah I see what you mean abt the TIE Lars. aalthough side to side, they look a close approximationt to the TIE but is quite obviously not as wide. Makes sense.

Well I have spent the majority of this evenign wearing the helmet. It is snug to slip it on, but once on, its surprisingly comfortable.

I did check inside the visor cover - no embossed sizing to the helmet - but I did find out that the Sierra Dual Visor Kit is only Medium?

Btw, I am not entirely sure, but I have the feeling that the X-wing helmet rides lower on the head also because it does not have any styrofoam protection inside. That could make the helmet look smaller.

Yup, Steve is right. These APH run small, and they are meant to be be very snug fit on your head. To me, nothing beats a real helmet converted to X-wing pilot helmet. It just has the "I am real" feeling to it. Great find!
