Heath Ledger Joker Bust

Hey everyone,

I've been posting on these boards for a while, but haven't actually shown anything of my own: until now. I'm trying to sculpt a super detailed bust of Heath Ledger as the Joker, and I've hit a bit of a snag. I really want to rough him out to the point that he looks like Heath, before I start really going in and detailing. Right now he looks like a combination of the Joker and the Goombas from the Super Mario Bros. movie.

Can you guys help me figure out what's wrong and where I should add/subtract? I've seen people on these boards have great success when everyone helps out. Help! Thanks .

You've NEVER sculpted ANYTHING? I'm not much help here, but that's a great start, considering your statement!:thumbsup

I'm no expert, but you can never have too much reference pictures.
In fact I have about a dozen pictures of Temuera for my Jango/clone sculpt and still look online for more.
Plus, anatomy books that show facial structures really help out as well.
Since you're doing Heath ledger, you may want to settle on a facial expression you want him to have.
Find pics of him on-line without the makeup to get the structure of his face from every possible angle and then work on the Joker details.
It's really tough sculpting from 2D pictures, so I'm really amazed at the skills of a lot of folks here.

That's good advice! I have a bunch of reference photos of Heath posted all over my wall that are serving as a pretty solid reference point. I really want to do something similar to the Joker bust Mike Hill just recently completed (in terms of expression).

I overlayed it and have already made some changes, but any chance someone here might be interested in doing a more accurate one? I've seen sculpts posted here that look off, and someone comes on to post a few things and the things are massively improved. Any help would be much appreciated. Below is what I'm going for:
