Hawkman Helmet WIP

Someone put the frackin' thing ON for a picture!

That was a very solemn, private moment in front of the hallway mirror.

The fit is hard for me to describe. For me, quite coincidentally, it's practically a perfect fit - to the point it almost feels like it was sculpted to my own head. Everything lines up right, but there's barely any wiggle room. If I were a costumer, I'd probably want to put a little padding in the helmet, but I don't know that I'd have room for that. A friend tried to put it on, and even though his head is smaller than mine overall, it's shaped differently enough that he couldn't get the helmet past his brow. Curious what other people's experiences will be when they get them finished.

The other thing I noticed (that I thought was really cool) is that the helmet preserves almost 100% of your peripheral vision. It doesn't look like it would be functional, but it kind of is. Even though I don't plan to wear mine, I feel like I could actually fight crime without tripping on something.

it is a great helmet. Beautiful! The only thing that bothers me (minor) is that the back of the wings are so flat.

I actually agree with you there, however it was a personal choice at the time. I had done a sculpt of minor feather texture on the back side, but had problems when testing the mold and how well I could make casts with it.
I've just gotten a commission to make the Savage Hawkman helmet (ironic), and will be testing some stuff out so that both sides will have detail on them. I'll be using my current helmet as the base to speed things up, so I might be able to make those wings available as well, and perhaps the Savage helmet should the client agree.

Bringing this thread back to show the finished helmet that Allan made for me. Also hoping that members who bought raw casts will check in and show off their builds as they finish them up. It's a great piece.

That thing is sick!! :thumbsup VERY NICE!!! Would love to see a complete costume made using that helmet as the basis.

I'm working on the current Hawkman run right now, under Art Thibert- I would love to show him this- told him about it yesterday and he got a real kick out of it. I hope you don't mind if I post a link on facebook to this thread.

Unfortunately the member has huge talent as an artist, but unfortunately is not very reliable as it seems. You may want to head over to the thread he has in the Junkyard before giving him wider exposure by linking to this thread in a social media network.

I'm the inker's assistant on the current run.

I messaged him, I really hope he gets back to me- My boss was super impressed and wanted to spot light him on the hackshack facebook...

I would also make a gentle recommendation to tread lightly in spotlighting, or in any way appearing to endorse this artist. His talents as a craftsman are decent, but he has been selling and accepting commissions on Hawkman helmets for well over a year now -- with follow-through one can only describe as agonizing.

I paid for one of the helmets a year ago, and took it upon myself to try and facilitate communication between the artist and the group of RPF buyers, when contact dropped into periods of silence. I gave him a cosmic-sized benefit of the doubt, and was very friendly in describing that members were more concerned about open communication, rather than immediate delivery. From what I've read recently, he has taken nothing from that experience.

Let me be clear. I did get my helmet. It's sitting right here in front of me, and I like it. But all the orders were fulfilled after several periods of anxiety and dead silence. Regretfully, I would not recommend him to a friend.

I definitely understand getting excited about a really cool piece of fan art; in that context, it's awesome. But it's impossible to publicize it without attributing it, so you should just be aware that the maker advertizes as a seller of (unlicensed) materials owned by your client, with a real shaky reputation for follow-through. Given that, you may want to consider what (actual or implied) endorsements you're putting out there.

Just trying to keep you safe.

True, and to add that he has been banned from selling on a few other forums.

+1. I couldn't have written it better myself. I purchased two helmets from him and the transaction was agonizing as stated above. I finally got both helmets one was great the other was cast so thin it isn't funny and the whole helmet has warped now :unsure.
