Has anyone tried backlighting goggles?

As the title says, has anyone tried backlighting goggles, or other types of eye-wear, with LEDs while allowing the wearer to still see through them?

Years ago someone (on the RPF) built up a Deepeyes from Final Fantasy that lit up blue and they could see thru.

Not sure if this is the one, but it gets the idea across:
