Has anyone done a HL-10 Lifting body?

I plan to just drop it right now, but I made provision for use of an Estes tiny "T" series rocket motor should it be that stable. This is just a prototype - the "real" one will be about 40" long and will have provision for an E-series motor.

Wow, it is going to take a bit of skill to fly this properly. But I most certainly wish you luck with it as this is a very cool project!

I think I'm OK there; I've been flying RC for 35 years. I also work with multiple world champion pilots. This will be fun for all of us.

Curious —*I saw how you stacked cross-sections on a dowel and then the next image you suddenly had something volumetric.

What is that stuff? Bondo or something similar? I'm trying to learn how to do this.

Sorry for my ignorance.

You're probably not directing that to me, but my HL-10 build thread shows intermediate steps.

Thanks, Andy. I saw yours. It looks like you went with balsa sheeting (sheathing?).

I'm curious about this technique because you have a lot more leeway to sand/shape.

It flies!

Got 10 "flights" in this afternoon!!! My early "falling with style" comment was definitely true.

After the release, the HL-10 would roll several times and quickly assume a nose-down attitude, gaining speed. You can see this tumble in one of the photos.

If you held a good bit of up elevator, it would suddenly pop out of the dive into horizontal flight, and from there you could fly it down as long as you kept the airspeed up. If you stalled it, it would roll.

It took the first 5 flights by David to get the balance and travel sorted out. I flew it 3 times, and Ian flew it once.

These were 5 second flights from about 300', and the first 150' was burned getting airspeed. It was definitely fun, but it'll be a while before I try stuffing an Estes engine in the back!

It's always a blast to fly a new design, but when it's a radical departure from the norm it's way more fun. I encourage you guys to try something really different.

Everyone,

This seems a very stale thread, but for me at least, one worth reviving if anyone else is interested.

How did this project turn out?

I did a build thread on RCGroups for mine. It flew well, but those are fast trips from 400' to ground!

Eventually I lost it to the corn. Watch for while plastic chips in your corn flakes :) I will build another someday, but right now I'm busy on some other projects.

I like what you did there, John. Is that from your own plans?

Andy,
Yes, I lofted the three view. Unfortunately when I assembled it on my my jig I let the nose fall without realizing it causing my nose to round. It is sort of a HL10 - M2F3 cross because of that error.
I guess really for me it was a proof of concept: the concept being can I loft and build something from a three view drawing.
I have started reading through your RC thread. Very interesting and some very familiar.

I had an opportunity to talk briefly with Dale Reed and later Albion Bowers later when I tried again to contact Mr. Reed.

Mr. Bowers sent me some drawings I hadn't seen anywhere else showing the variable center of gravity for powered vs unpowered flight.

Thank you for your response and positive comment.

John

You done good!

The HL-10 interest waxes and wanes, alternating with other projects. The waxing project for me right now is a 1/8 scale Aereon 26 (N2627) lifting body.
