Halo: Forward Unto Dawn Master Chief build

Hello all!!

Since I've been a member here for a few years, and now that I have a few costumes under my belt, I thought I should just go for it and make a build thread for my next project. While at C2E2 this April, my friends and I were discussing what ideas we had for new costumes and projects. Remembering how much I loved the FUD movie, and how awesomely crafted Chief's suit was and how bad ass it made his character come across, I blurted out "I'd love to do the Forward Unto Dawn Master Chief, but I'm not sure if there are pepakura files for it?"

Well, once I got home from the con, and about one minute of internet research, I found a set of files. I was thrilled! Downloaded them all right away.
As I opened each file, I began to slowly lose confidence in the idea of making this suit. The reason why was because the only pepakura files that exist for this armor are quite low definition and missing a lot of details (I'm kinda anal about details lol). I guess I'm just too spoiled from the pep files I've used in the past to make various costumes being so detail oriented that I started to think I wasn't going to be able to do this. It was always so easy just relying on the pep file. But I soon started to think how fun it would be to get creative and make this build a bit more of my own; put my own little signature on it, from help of the writer of these files, of course.

After more research for picture references and what not, I started to think of ways I could build onto, or modify the pepakura model of each piece once it was built.
And to further help my ambition, I came across a beautiful FUD Chief helmet from Rusty and the crew over at Stoney Props. Needless to say, I pick one up, and it's flawless!! I shall post pictures when I think to take some.

ANYWAYS......onto the build...I picked a pretty easy piece to start with: the bicep. Was going like a charm until I realized the file was unfolded to be two separate pieces and with no spare pieces to connect them!! Grrrr. Well after about an hour I figured how I could join them and make it work....(you can see two built stand-alone pieces by my ps3 controller)

Here are the two pieces attached to make the bicep:

So it's coming along nicely. Already have a few ideas to get a couple more details added to this piece. Pics will come as soon as I make the modifications.
Going to be moving on to the shoulder next.
I'll just keep posting progress even if no one's interested or not, hahaha.

Any questions or comments/criticism, by all means ask and/or suggest away!!

Whipped up the shoulders pretty quickly! This piece was quite fun to build; I really like the shape and styling. Spent a while modifying the pepakura file because it was unfolded in a very unconventional and unergonomic way. But, it was fun to do that as well. Saved myself half the cutting and gluing time by reducing the number of pieces literally in half! :) Here are some pics:

Enjoy for now! I know it's just boring pepakura updates, but should be a little more exciting in the next week or so

Very nice!

Thank you!

Those edges are so crisp. Great work, keep it up!

Thank you! will do ;)

Got the forearms pepped out:

As you can see from the screen shots: the pep file is missing a ton of details. Going to get creative and think of some ways I could add details to make it look a bit more like the screen used suit. I'm not looking to achieve 100% accuracy because I'm not that good lol. But maybe 80-ish% :)

Word.

Added some details to the forearms:

Pretty happy with how it turned out. It will look a lot better once these get their first coat of primer to get rid of all the pen marks and what not. Kind of difficult adding pieces once these were already assembled. Had to have a very fresh xacto blade so I could make easy and clean cuts into the areas that needed to be cut out. That was really the only challenging part of a first try attempt of modifying a pepakura model this way. I plan on adding some more details once it's been resined and fiberglassed. More to come soon :)

Hey man, I am really digging this build. The thing I have found about Pepakura ( This is not intended to be offensive) is that anyone can put it together. But its HOW you finish it which makes the difference. I am hoping at this point you have not started bondoing everything together.

There are many ways you can add details to your armor and I can definitely give you some pointers if you'd like. Also, many times its about finding the materials that you are comfortable with.

Send me a PM and I'll see if I can help. I am about sharing techniques and skills.

Thanks,

Tank

hey great build so far looking for ward on seeing the end result keep up the great work

Is it ok if i ask where you got the files i would like to try to build one myself

Thanks

Well it's about time I resurrect this build thread. I've made a ton of progress since I got frustrated with this project and quite over a year ago. So now it's time to share with any of those of you who care what I've done with this armor :)
So for starters, I got the two forearms glassed, and one of them spot putty-ied:

I also glassed the handplates. But upon further inspection from mine and the photo references I have of the armor used in the movie, I realized I was missing a lot of details :/ So I figured I'd re-pep them, and add all the proper details I could:

As you can see, a much better improvement. And I up-scaled them a little bit too. lots more updates to come!!!

Got the biceps glassed, bondo'ed (where needed), spot putty'ed, and foam indentations and protrusions added. Sorry about the bad cell phone pics :/

I also have the ab plate and epaulets glassed, smoothed, details added, and will be priming and adding a silver later today. Will post pics later!!

A few more pics for you guys here. Got one forearm painted green, and have the biceps primed and the two stripes on the right bicep masked off and ready for silver and color. check it:

And a few pics of some pieces in silver:

Here are a few more pieces painted in green. Black wash and dry brushing yet to come. These pics make the green look very jade-ish, but it's really just olive green. Enjoy!! Oh,and I cut out the holes for the lights on the shoulders.

I have a few pics of the biceps painted:

I'm really happy with how the masked off stripes came out. I've never done any kind of two layer painting like that
