Hi there,
I just wanted to upload some pics, and maybe ask a few questions about a scratch building project I've been working on.
I was really pleased to stumble upon this site recently while looking at picture of other people's scratch builds (specifically this one, woah) because the piece I'm working on is from one of my favourite fandoms, Halo.
The structure I'm working on is a Forerunner beacon, from the level 'Halo' in Halo: Combat Evolved, here's a pic of it below:

Originally I was going to build the entire structure, but I've decided that's a bit too ambitious for the time being, so I'm just aiming to build the base of it for the time being and go from there.
I started work on this about a year ago, measuring up pieces and cutting them out of 1mm Evergreen styrene sheet. But for whatever reason I left the project and stored the pieces away, I think because I was finding it difficult getting the pieces to glue together seamlessly.
But I pulled the pieces out the other week, and with a slightly less perfectionist approach began assembling them, which this time around I found to be a lot of fun (it was like a a boxed kit I'd left for myself!).

I continued working from what I'd started with, and now the lower portion is nearly complete.

The last thing I need to do for this part before I start working on the upper platform is close off the corner sections. This I'm having the most trouble approaching, because it deals with multiple angles, and the pieces don't lock together at 90 degree angles so I can't brace them using square pieces like you can see I've done everywhere else. I'm thinking I'll hold the pieces in place with masking tape and apply putty to the back, but if you have any other suggestions that would be great.

Anyway, this has been a really fun project so far (even though cutting the styrene by hand is starting to kill my wrists, I'm thinking of buying some of NorthWest Short Line's cutting products, if anyone has experience with/recommends these?). I just found out the other day that what I've done so far is actually perfectly in scale with most table top war gaming figures, so maybe I can try and get this done in time for Spartan Games' new line of Halo miniatures next year...
More to come soon
