Hail, Caesar! (Post-release)

It's in the first line of the plot description on wikipedia. We need to find an official statement on the subject. Your logic makes sense. Still, a 302 wouldn't be out of place in 1954, definitely not enough to break immersion.

I'd think that the Bikini Atoll test pretty definitively tells us what year the movie is set in, unless the test actually took place in '51 but wasn't made public until '54.
 
In the production notes, the costume designer and Channing Tatum both say "1951," exactly.

Some promo graphics say MCML, 1950; while the title card for "Lonesome Ol' Moon" seems to say MCMLI, but it's so low-rez that's debatable.

Additionally, the opening of the production notes simply says 'the early 1950's.'

And I see that Ethan Coen himself has stated that the movie takes place in "roughly" 50, 51. So that settles it.
