Groot Mask!

I loved loved loved Guardians of the Galaxy...like everyone else.

I started making a groot mask out of eva foam but became side tracked and didn't complete it... I managed to get there in the end and kind of documented it as i went along...
not sure if i'm gonna build a whole suit? i'll see how enthusiastic I am after the release of the Blu ray.

I made it from one square of the EVA 10mm foam. a heat gun, knife, dremel and hot glue was everything i used to get the shape.

the twists and overlaps etc i made by cutting brunch like strips and simply overlapping them, it gave them a kind of narly look, i don't have the skill to carve them all out with the dremel.

the eyes are just brown sunglass lenses...

I don't know how to paint and dreaded doing it cause i don't know how, thats why it took me about 3 months to finish it.

I pretty much just guessed my way there,
heres what i did.
first i spray painted it all brown (it was too dark, almost black) i then used acrylic paints with a brush and went over it all with a light brown colour, i added some yellowish and redish browns and green for the mossy areas...

on top of his head i cut the foam into strips and heated and twisted them with the heat gun, it was an easy way to get good shapes, i glued that to the top, i wasn't too worried about making it look great as most would be covered in moss later

all that was left was to add a little dark grey for shading and glue moss that i bought from a train/hobby store and glue in the eyes.

hope I finish a full suit... probably like most of us we are working on too many things at once :D

Great looking mask! This is one of the best I've seen as far as capturing his essence and personality without making him look either too goofy or too sad.

So how snug is the mask? I'm curious because I'm trying to size out mine, but since I wear glasses I need a bit extra room inside. But my initial patterns won't even fit on one of those EVA squares, yet alone have all that extra room like yours does. Or did you make the back part a separate piece of foam altogether?

thanks guys :D
DRG Its made in 2 pieces "front and back" then glued together. all from the same square. it's pretty snug for my head. i'm 5'11" with a medium sized head. if you have a bigger head you may need an extra mat so you can utilise most of one mat for the front.

Ahh, that makes sense. I did a guesstimate on the height of your mask based on its placement on the EVA square and it seems to be only about an inch or two shorter in the face than my attempt - yet you had so much more room on the mat, but mine is all one wrap around piece (so far).

Looking at it again, I can kind of see where the pieces join, but you did it in a way that makes a lot of sense... it actually helps the visual rather than being an obvious seam. Very cool!
