Green Lantern Movie Ring

the Toyrus die cast ring looks like the before and the DC direct one looks like the after..
Hal must of thought it was a candy ring.

I'm really underwhelmed with the gem and lack of "crystalline" structure on the green face for the DC Direct ring. Both pieces appear to be just plain transparent. Even the TRU ring has more crystal texture under the face!

I claim false advertising :) The "fantasy" photo they advertised with doesn't really look like the face and gem that was actually released. Bummer, cuz that picture looked awesome

which always seems to be the case with licensed movie prop replicas..
they always have those little disclaimers attached to the pics too.

Why is no one ever whelmed? You are underwhelmed over the DCD ring, I am overwhelmed at how much better the TRU ring is for a quarter of the price....but no one is whelmed.....

i just picked up the dcd ring from my local dr nos comic shop and i love it. its way more accurate than the toys r us ring even after modding and its the perfect size for my finger. the only thing im wondering about is the gold band, isnt it silver in the movie?

if anyone wants more comparasin pics i can post some later tonight.

*Puts on Devil's Advocate Hat*

The essential problem here is that many people wanted a ring that looks JUST like the one seen in Abin Sur's palm when he hands the ring to Hal and NOT one that looks like the filming prop that Ryan Reynolds ACTUALLY WORE. As has been mentioned in pretty much every topic across the internet about this ring, the one in Abin's palm existed SOLELY INSIDE A COMPUTER, it is a totally CG ring. For that reason, they were able to put those details inside the gems, what you describe as "crystalline details", Bimmer, and what I chose to call "ribbons of energy" because that's what they look like to me. That effect/look is neither easy nor practical to create in a physical prop that exists in the real world, especially one as small as that ring prop. Were they able to create it in the much larger Power Battery Prop? Yes. In the Power Ring Prop, NO.

If you haven't already done so, get your hands on a copy of Constructing Green Lantern and flip through the front of the book until you turn to the 2-page spread that's a lovely closeup of the actual filming prop in Ryan Reynold's hand. THAT is what DC Direct has recreated to the best of their ability. They were given one of the power ring props made for the production of the movie so that they could recreate it to the highest degree possible. For better or worse, they did make some changes to the design, most notably the elimination of the hole behind the center gem that the film makers used as a "light pipe" to light up the gem in some scenes. But it is still a fantastic replica of the filming prop. And to any that don't agree, I hereby challenge you to do better! ;)

After seeing the movie, I could have swore that when abin sur was wearing it, it had a gold band, but when Hal had it, it was silver. Maybe it was just the cgi lighting. Maybe someone else can comment?

Yeah, it seemed to vary from gold to silver to no band. Definitely very hard to tell what the actual color is...

Hey Jack T Chance, anyway we could get a scan of those pages of the prop ring? I don't think I've seen them.

Here is a scan from my book. Not the best, but you get the idea. Its very similar to the pic we've already seen from the trailer, but the lighting is different and the (gold?) band is visible

I've never seen a pic of it with a silver ring. Maybe the cg version and actual prop ring had two different colors.

Do all the aliens in the movie have the same type of ring?
Yes, at least all the ones where you can see their rings with enough detail to tell.

Thanks for posting that. I don't own a scanner right now, so it would have been harder for me to post a pic.

This is why I suggested to everyone that they PICK UP A COPY OF THE BOOK... notice I didn't say BUY, I just said PICK UP... as in, walk into a book store and grab a copy off of the shelf... and then turn to that picture. Seeing it on the printed page, there's no mistake at all... the metal ring around the center gem is SILVER, just as we were told by nexnox, who is one of 2 RPF members that actually MADE the rings for the movie production. So when he says they made the rings with a silver ring, trust me, it's silver. ;)

Now, the CGI version may sometimes be shown with a gold/brass colored ring, I'll have to look more closely next time I see the movie.

Well if the guy that made them said they were Silver, I'll go with that lol.

Must just be the reflection or something. Thanks for answering my question about the other rings.

I could easily understand how the small silver ring looks gold. Lighting can do that very easily. In the early days when I was trying to replicate the BSG wing and rank pins, I had to check and re-check images of the real props because at times the pins looked all gold. My first run of the pins were all gold with mixed textures. It was not till a display with real props at a convention did I get the proof of the sections being silver.

I believe that it is the reflection of the skin color in the silver that makes it look gold.

I got mine yesterday. Love it other than the gold band. Also, it is definitely size 13 or close. It fits my left midle, which is size 13, almost perfectly. I may try to get another one to dremel out the inside so that it fits my right hand.
