Green Lantern Movie Ring

Now I must make that Sinestro Ring,

And I really like that battery so much more than the one they decided to use. I cannot understand why the current batteries have to look to weathered and beat up.

Same reason the ring does... it's ancient.

Personally, I preferred the good old days, when the rings and power batteries were said to be indestructable. A race as advanced as the Guardians should have no problem making that the case. It was only the inferior yellow power ring, produced by the Weaponers of Qward, that could be destroyed back in the old days.

But years of retcons later, that's all been changed. So now, we get a movie where the power battery and ring really show their age.

Finally got two of these die cast rings. They look great, just wish it was slightly bigger. And WHAT is that sticky stuff inside the band!?

The ring that comes with the figures is nothing like the key chain ring. It is all plastic and very chunky.

Best,
DBCooper

Does anyone know for sure what size the ring is? It looked like a 13 to me when I compared it to one of the rings I was wearing, but I wasn't positive.

I'm following Batjeepster's tutorial on modding the TRU ring.

Was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best gems for the inside? I've looked at Michaels and Hobby Lobby, just not finding the right one.

Also any advice on either faking the illusion of glowing or possibly rigging and LED to the inside? We've been experimenting with LED's and a switch but can't get it to work right.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I work at a movie theater so I wanna have ring, mask, and possibly contacts ready by then.

Thanks.

Does he come with bzzd too?

Maybe they realized the plastic ring was crap and that we are all buying the die cast one haha

Now they're gonna release Battle armor Hal jordan and his helmet will be from......THE GREEN GOBLIN!

Doesn't that Die Cast ring have a silver ring around the stone? And doesn't the stone look more transparent?

has anyone received the dc direct ring yet? would love to see an actual pic of it
Justin, it STILL HAS NOT SHIPPED!!!

The latest shipping update from Diamond Distribution has it that the Movie Power Ring Prop Replica will hit comic shops on WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15th, 2011... just 2 days before the movie opens... followed by the Movie Power Battery Prop Replica on July 6th.

DC Direct being, well, DC Direct, and with Diamond being Diamond, these dates are still subject to change.

Your best bet for a really nice stone would be cabochon cut synthetic Emerald- but it won't be cheap. You might also be able to find a foil backed glass green cabochon for a lot less- foil backed stones are pretty common in costume jewelry.

For making the ring glow have a look at the tutorial I posted here several years ago-
How to make a Green Lantern ring- including a glowing version!

You might need to go with something like a super low profile surface mount LED- something like a PLCC-2 package would probably work with a thin watch battery.

Alrighty, here we go... the DC Direct Movie Power Ring Prop Replica hit comic shops everywhere YESTERDAY, and I got to hold it and try it on at my Local Comic Shop! :D

But more importantly, Green Lantern Corps Message Board member gl2814h shared these posts:

I have small fingers so I have to use a ring sizer. I can see this ring selling out. As of yesterday I could still order them from Diamond so I dunno... A lot of LCS might have only ordered 1 or 2.

Here are comparison pictures: The TRU diecast ring, DCD Movie prop ring and the WB Promo ring.

This is the WB Promo ring given to their PR people. This is it in the box which I like a whole lot more then the box the DCD ring came with.

Side, the side does not have a whole lot of detail the weathering effect is kinda lacking.

And one of my favorite rings...

All in all the TRU ring is the biggest and seems to be too bulky for my taste. The WB Promo ring is the smallest(not in ring size just in style)...but seems almost to small now that I have the DCD Ring. The DCD Ring is a perfect middle ground, its weathered detail on the ring band is not over done like the TRU ring or underdone like the promo ring. I really like how the middle of the DCD ring seems to be a lighter green than the top and bottom of the symbol it gives it some depth. Price wise I spent the most for the WB Promo ring, 27.00 for the DCD Ring and 10.00-34.00 for the TRU Ring. I think the DCD ring is the better of the 3. But I do love the WB Promo ring the awesome box gives it an advantage. I have another DCD Ring ordered for myself just for one to wear.

As far as paint goes the DCD ring really has little paint unless the "weathered" look is the paint being referred too. I see no reason for the DCD ring to not be worn in moderation. I would asume the only side effect of wear would be scratches and the possiblity of the gem/face coming unglued....but I would expect the ring to need a lot of abuse first. The face seems to be on the band very snugly. The TRU diecast ring has more movement in the face than either of the other two rings.
Now, some of you may notice right away that it doesn't look quite as nice as the solicitation image. I knew right away that the solicitation image most likely showed the ring in a "fantasy situation" wherein it looks like the CGI ring seen on Abin Sur's hand in the trailers, with "ribbons" of emerald energy (for lack of a better term) visible inside the gemstones of the ring. But I knew that was not going to be something that could be easily replicated in a prop replica, otherwise the real, physical prop Ryan Reynolds wore would have had that effect duplicated within it, which it did not.

Ultimately, DC Direct's version is the best prop replica of this ring available right now, but it is not without its inaccuracies compared to the Real McCoy. From examining the best images available of the real prop (including a very crisply focused closeup shown as a 2-page spread in the book Constructing Green Lantern) here's what jumped out at me:
  1. Despite showing the correct, silver-colored metal ring around the center gem in their solicitation image, DC Direct has put the inaccurate BRASS-COLORED ring on the final production run. :thumbsdown
  2. The center gem is a lighter color than the rest of the face. While this makes it more readily match the look of the ring in the final movie, where a CG glow has been added in a lot of scenes, it doesn't seem to be accurate to the filming prop. Photos of the prop seem to show the center gem being the same color. So, you'll either love this alteration, or hate it, depending on your personal preference.
  3. The weathering on the band is not as dark as I expected, based on DC's solicitation photo and the promotional ring they sent out to "the Great and the Good" back in the fall of last year. But I'm still not sure which is more accurate to the movie prop, as even watching the trailers in 1080p AND looking at the picture in Constructing Green Lantern has not shown me a good enough look at the band of the actual prop. I'm very disappointed with the lack of photos of the filming prop in that book. We have one, good, face-on picture, basically a better snap of this image...

    GLmoviePowerRingRealPropCloseup.jpg

...and that's it. VERY disappointed. Was looking forward to lots of lovely photographs of that ring. :(
  4. Also, the DC Direct version is missing the hole in the center of the band, behind the center gem, that allowed light to shine through the gem in the scene pictured above, giving a very practical way to light up the ring in some scenes.
But all in all, this is the replica to own! Since it was molded directly from a filming prop, we know that the details are as accurate as can be (aside from the inaccuracies mentioned above) and it is far more affordable than the fan-made replicas that many here on the RPF have picked up. Even at full MSRP, you can buy 5 or 6 of these for what you'd pay for ONE fan-made replica with a silver band! So for many of us, this will be the ring of choice to add to our collection. I'm glad I ordered 2, and may even grab a third if the opportunity presents itself! :cool:thumbsup

Now begins the agonizing wait for mine to show up from Discount Comic Book Service! :unsure

I'm also waiting for mine from DCBS. They sent me an email on the 15th with a UPS tracking number. Checked today and it said the shipment was cancelled. Then got another email with a USPS tracking number.

I hate to hear that this is actually size 11. One reason that I bought one was because it said size 13. I would be more likely to get the 13 on the correct finger.

Who knows, if they are still available when mine arrives and I like it well enough I might try to get a second one. The band looks thicker so I could probably dremel out the inside to make it fit.
