Original grail tablet color.

Hello,

I am looking for original cast grail tablet, doesn't have to be nice or even complete, because it's for using as reference for genuine sandstone carving project, I just need all surface detail to be as accurate as possible as the carving will take me ages to do.
I will try several technics to simulate real damages, won't be simple, but this is a project I want to make for a while.
I contacted sarednab who has one, but he is not the maker, made about 10 years ago, maybe someone know who made it so I can contact him?!
After a small search it seems the original maker to be "Peter_74", I will try to find him, hoping he is still active, and try to get a rough one.
peter74 not made it, peter74 sell replica of the tablet made by him, not from original cast

As I said you by PM, I don’t remember propmaker name, it was long time ago (I think more than 10 years).

Thanks! now I understand it! very sorry for the confusion!!!
For now I saw two of them, or look very close.
ons is yours, other is from yourprops member "graal"

After some searches, it seems that tablet was not cast from original, I have been able to see the exact same, very large picture and compare to original (book, picture, pre 1993 archive picture, and screenshot) it's not the same.
So, I would like to know if original recase exist or cast from production exist, it's a project I want to make, and maybe a run.
In the worst case I should make a run of the one pictured before.

There isn’t a unique tablet made for the movie. I seen several original, many have a different finish

possibly, if you consider more removal and smoother finish, could be, but definitely not the one we see on screen.

Hello,
Original prop color question !
After several years, I was finally able to obtain a piece, cast from original tablet, owned by "graal" on yourprops.
Here is another picture of his original prop, now sold:
Tablette_graal.jpg

He made a mold and shot 3 casts, kept one, and sold two other, one to me.
I plan to carve a full piece from genuine stone, which I found in a friends garden.
Here in my city, stones like this were used for knifemaking, shaping and sharpening.
The material is a reddish sandstone, and I have been able to find a good one, if the size is large enough to make the complete grail tablet.
It's stiff enough to get carved but not too hard, so it would be possible to make a very accurate finish.
I made a partial carving attempt.
The stone color is very accurate to the replica I obtained, which is accurate to the original the seller owned.
Also it looks accurate to movie screenshot (grey reddish color, picture one), and quite accurate to the propstore auction, using artificial light (picture two)

Back home, where my replica tablet is, I shot picture of genuine sandstone material compared to replica, cast from original.
If the replica color is correctly matching the original prop, it seems the natural sandstone color would be a perfect match, maybe some yellowish color extra layer to add to bring some patina, and it will be perfect.
The engraving has been done from a picture on my phone as I was not home, so the size and shape doesn not match perfectly.
I will go back to my new home, with the tablet replica, and visit the friend who owns the piece of sandstone, then I will be able to know if the piece is large enough to carve the full stone, if large enough I will also carve some upper fragments, to display as later finds in the same area as the main piece in the movie.

Love it!

I visited my friend, and his stone is...too small, less or more 3-4cm missing.
I put request on website for another, larger size, hoping I will get some offers!

The request gave absolutely no reply, I asked for a larger grinding wheel, similar to this stone, where my sample comes from, the only reply I got was for a smaller stone, with a different color (older type of grinding wheel used in same area, but coming from closer location, explanations later in the post)

I am knifemaker, and now lives again in the french knife city, where many stones like this can be found, the average size is around 70cm
I was suspecting those to be made from vosgian sandstone, with the typical red color.
I own two old books about cutlery, one from XVIII, not mentioning vosgian stone in knifemaking history:

another from 1896, mentioning vosgian stones:

I also asked to a friend who is specialist in knife related history, business, and family history, he told me vosgian stones started to be found after the railway was built around 1850:

So, the most accurate stone I can find is now identified, and it's red sandstone from vosgian area, lucky me, before it has been used in cutlery area, it has been a very common stones used for construction, door rims, walls, and floor.
So I contacted antiquaria from vosgian area and made request: about 50x 50x 5cm red sandstone slab, old or new, and I got a positive reply, still waiting for price and pictures, the material itself is not very expensive, but very heavy, so the shipping cost may be a bit high.
Once I will get it, I will make a stencil of the lettering, and prepare the shape, then, it will be time for carving!

hello, not for now, sadly I found the accurate stone, but the seller finally didn't want to ship anymore.
I will probably have to go there in person...
