Grail diary questions

Hey guys,

I have seriously combed the Internet (including rpf and COW) trying to find a printable diary. I have found the 60 or so pages of the computer game diary but it is not what I see in the pictures in some work in progress threads here in the rpf. I am doing the carbon paper method so I really need the full diary as reference. Is there anywhere on the web you can get the full diary as sellers clam on eBay? I don't know if I'm missing anything in my iPhone but I can't "see" the full diary on indianajones.dk.

Thanks
Kody

Hey Kody, I sent you a PM, hope it helps. Most of those "full" diaries are PDF files; does the iPhone need an app to read them?

Thanks! Also, is the diary pretty much the first three signatures repeated with some add-ins at the end?

It depends if you're making a hero diary or a story diary. I have a hand drawn story diary and a printed hero diary. I could tell you which one was harder....

ok, correct me if I'm totally off here (I'm new to Indy props), but is the hero diary the 60 pages repeated until a couple in the end and the story diary the diary that Henry "would" have carried in real life. So the story diary tells the tale of Henry's research, though most of it isn't in the actual movie? I'd guess the story diary would take a lot more time if I'm understanding the distinction between the two.

Something like that, yeah. It's a bit more complicated; there are more than just a couple of pages that are unique throughout the diary. But yeah, a story diary would tell of Henry's search for the grail, but it wouldn't be accurate to the movie prop. I was always more interested in the actual prop rather than a story diary, as I really don't care what Henry was supposedly doing in 1908.

On that note, none of the diaries on eBay are "screen accurate" as they like to claim. Anything that uses a computer font is not accurate, nor is anything that steps out of the pages of the original diary (as there is no "story" to the original diary). The one guy says his diary is "unlike any other you have seen or is for sale on the web" but most of his content is just stolen from a free website without permission.

ok, so does your diary have the repeated signatures?

The thing I'm having a hard time grasping is if the computer game stuff is reliable. Most of the drawings look unbelievably cartoony. That is definitely NOT what I'm going for. Like I said before, I'm doing this all by hand, but I'd really like to have the diary printed so I use carbon paper to transfer text and images. I honestly can't write in that script because my handwriting is....terrible to say the least. Anyone who has bought Joker fabric from me can attest because I hand address each envelope...carefully!

Yes, the diary that I made was based on the hero/what was seen on film.

As for the computer game diary... Haha, no, that's not what you want to aim for. The handwriting in the computer game diary, if we're talking about actual scans of it, is not the same style, so don't worry about that. As for the drawings in it, those are largely invented and overly simplified, with only a few of them actually being based on original drawings from the prop. Note that none of the latter are direct copies of the prop drawings, so they aren't completely accurate in nature.

If I'm mistaken and you're actually referring to either Jan's or Hector's work, then disregard what I said there; obviously the computer fonts aren't the same style of writing, but the drawings are more accurate than what is in the computer game diary.

Honestly? As this is your first diary, I wouldn't worry about matching the handwriting style, and just carefully ;) use your own writing.

I think I'm going to go with the version 9 diary on indianajonesprops. I'll probably add in some stuff if my own. What would you suggest as far as printing in the right scale. I got click book but I can't seem to find a way to print a custom width and heighth.

I have always wanted to make one of these, but never could get it to print right. Not really sure what I am doing wrong, but as I said I have never done anyhting like trying to make a entire book. If anyone has any ideas on how these should be printed it would be great to know. I know it not going to be as good as a hand drawn diary but I just dont have the time to do it myself, or the funds to buy one already made. So any help would be appreciated.

im interested in a story diary myself. Ive been meaning to find something akin to the OP then print the pictures at a low opacity to allow me to trace over them. This would allow me to have the pictures look fantastic while not being printed.

That would be a good idea too, maybe could use some carbon paper or the like, because lord knows that I am no artist. I had read where some people were using Click Books, but dont really know much about it. Does anyone know of any good programs for printing books. I can think of lots of projects that I could do if I had a good program for printing the signatures in the correct order and orientaion.

I've been doing my own hand-written story diary (using the available PDF files) over the last two years or so. I use my own "close enough" script and carbon paper for the drawings.

The hardest part is getting the print the right size so that it fits on the page like the original. Write too large and you end up spilling over to another page, write too small and you can end up throwing yourself off, as well.

After a few pages, the script comes much easier, but you can spend a day drawing just one picture.

I did a story version and hand wrote it, in fact, twice! First in pencil, then in ink and erased the pencil. Going to perfect the handwriting and write the next one just once.

I made a couple of original inserts too, have to find the files for those and put them up here.
