GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build - New Boot Rockets - Post #201

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Blasters look good. I've got a pair myself. I need to pick up a new air compressor for my air brush before painting them up. I love the idea of using the vinyl wrap, and will have to incorporate it into mine when I get to work on it.

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

The only thing i lack is an airbrush to do the blue-ing of the metal on the barrel tips. I tried painting with acrylic paint over the rub n buff last night, but it just wipes right off. I could try with spray paint, but i think i'll just leave them like this.

Wow ok. Was wondering how you wrapped the handles. Very cool.

The vinyl wrap is flexible and will wrap around contours with some heat applied. A quick blast with a heat gun and the vinyl softens and allows you to wrap around the curved surfaces. I started with one big piece and worked my way slowly around the handle. I cut lines in for the interior surfaces of the hand grips, heated, then wrapped the vinyl inward. This left some uncovered spaces, but I just went back in with some small pieces and tried to match the pattern to complete coverage.

It it was some fiddly work, but the vinyl was pretty forgiving, and while it's not perfect, the pattern on the vinyl does a good job of hiding inperfections.

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

can you elaberate on the rub and buff....is that a paint or a coating...purchased were?......

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Rub n buff is a wax based paint found in most craft/hobby stores. Once applied it can be buffed to a shine

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Kevin said it. It comes in little tubes, like the tiny toothpaste size you get at the dentist. It's a liquidy paste that's essentially a wax/glue that's been mixed with silver leaf. It turns whatever you rub it on silver. Like Kevin said, if you apply a solid coat of it and buff it like you were shining a shoe, you will get a very shiny metal finish. To get a worn down look, I first paint the subject black. Then using an applicator (I used the rough inside of an old sock) that has an uneven texture, I lightly sweep the rub n buff across the surface in a single direction, slowly building up the silver. Too much and it will get too shiny. Going slow allows you to control how shiny it gets. Allowing the black underneath to show through gives you the aged look.

After a few hours it will dry in place and you're good to go.

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Thought I was finished with my blasters, but that wrap on the handles looks amazing. Totally going hunting for that stuff tomorrow. Thanks for all of the pics!

Also, I prefer the look of the trench coat, but was having a hard time finding any good pics of it. I already have the shorter coat bought, it will be here tomorrow. The place I'm talking to said they can make anything if I can send them good photos. LOL the only good photos I can find of that trench coat are pics of some of the action figures.

Anyone have a good picture of the trench coat?

ETA also found these shirts on Ebay, plenty of shades of gray and blue to choose from:

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Yep, I bought the same long sleeve tee off of amazon in an ocean blue color. Id like it a bit more grey, but it will do. I could dye it lightly with some black dye, but I think I can live with it.

Youre best bet for pictures of the long coat is to do screen grabs from the trailers. That scene where he gets caught trying to steal the orb has some great detail shots. There's a lot of interesting details embedded in the leather.

Picked up some carbon fiber stuff at Pep Boys today, just did the first gun. that was not fun. Definitely looks better, but not nearly as clean as yours. Did you really use one piece to go all the way around? I ended up using two main pieces because going around the back was a pain in the butt with the grip being uneven.

i started with one piece, I got it wrapped around the back of the handle as far as I could, but eventually, the vinyl just has to go another direction because of all the complex curves along the back. So I cut it, overlapped the back of the handle, and started my way around the other side. It's not all a single piece. In some places, like say for example inside the trigger guard, the vinyl just isn't long enough to cover all the sides of the interior. So I would cut small pieces and use them to cover over places that the main pieces didn't cover.

The heat gun is your friend. Don't overuse it because you can melt the vinyl or warp it so much that the pattern is lost. But it can make the vinyl more pliable...and more forgiving around some of the more difficult sections.

Mine is far from perfect. In fact I might go back and redo some spots before I wrap my other blaster. It definitely is a trying job and takes a lot of patience, which I don't usually have. Keep working at it, you should still have plenty of the vinyl left. Good luck!

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

LOL ok now I feel better. Your other post made it sound like you used just one big piece to go all the way around, and then a few small pieces here and there. The curve of the back of the grip turns the vinyl so that you can't go all the way around. Sounds like you did the same thing I did, split it down the back.

I'm going to try the 2nd blaster tomorrow. If I do a much better job, I'll probably go back and redo the first one.

Thanks for the help! Always fun trying new things. Never even heard of this carbon fiber wrap stuff.

Re: GOTG: My own Star-Lord Build

Yes it has adhesive, but it's very forgiving. The instructions that came with mine said to wet the surface first, if you do that, it tends to slide all over the place. I had an easier time working with the surface dry. It's still very easy to move around, peel off/reapply etc.

But this is my first time working with it, so I have no idea what I'm doing. Mine looks pretty good from a distance, but if you inspected it up close you probably wouldn't be that impressed. ;)

Trying #2 today.
