Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

I think it's funny how people are going to ignore how blatantly sexist the film is against men, after Feige and Sony screamed "SEXIST" to those who criticized the film at all

I don't think that word means what you think it does. Is it because a ghost dude gets shot in the balls? Do people cry "sexism" every time a person is shot or kicked in other movies? Is it because the secretary character is not bright? Is it because people are used to seeing ultra competent men in movies? What do you feel is sexist in the movie (Taking into consideration neither of us have seen the movie)

I haven't seen it either, and likely never will - not because the team is women this time around, but because they abandoned the original continuity and I haven't been able to get all the way through a Feig movie yet - but if the reviews are accurate, consider the inverse: A film in which the four male leads are competent, intelligent, and right about everything. They're surrounded by female characters who are all either evil, sexist, stupid, or "nerdy" to some heavy-handed degree. The film calls attention to the gender of these characters semi-regularly, and in the end the evil nerd woman becomes a giant ghost who the men defeat by shooting off her boobs. I've never had an issue with the gender of the new team, but for a production crying "sexism!" as loud as it can in order to drown out other legitimate criticisms, there is certainly a double-standard at play.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

sony promotes the shills for us. never even heard of some of these.

Yes, I do know what that word means. Ever heard of misandry before? Fiege clearly expressed his own dis-appreciation for males growing up, but it certainly carries over into his films. Yes, based on the film's reviews and expressed interests in how he portrayed the male characters in the film, and of all, defeating the main villain by shooting him in the junk is blatantly targeted against men. Give me a movie where the main villain in a woman and she get's defeated by shooting at her own nether regions. Will you all cry sexism then? Cause I'm pretty sure you all would

The IRONY of this whole debacle is disgustingly thick

it's also the same in the heat. the main villain gets shot in the balls with a real gun.
these people hate men. although I can't help but wonder if feig is playing the sympathy card and he didn't really get bullied. maybe HE was the bully toward the guys in his class, and the guys just called him on it.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

I...rather doubt that Sony is spreading cash around to buy reviews left and right. Not every positive review is posted by a "shill."

Look, I think this film looks pretty uninspired and like a corporate cash-in designed to check audience feedback boxes in the most unimaginative ways possible.

But the fact that some reviewers do/will like this film doesn't mean that they're all shills and paid Sony hacks.

That's also not to say that I don't think Sony is above manipulating social media feeds or posting blurbs from 4 star reviews that are made up on their posters. But that's not unique to this film and is something the industry does all the time.

That, however, is very different from buying the loyalty of people at major publications. At best, you might find an "access for 0.5 a grade higher" implicit understanding. But even then, it's doubtful and never ever explicit.

To be honest, I'm surprised that as many reviews a are coming out that say negative things about the film. I expected there to be way more positive views of the film and a lot of time spent discussing the meta-film controversy.

Regardless, the reviews are but one piece of the puzzle. Box office and especially 2nd weekend box office, will determine the fate of this nascent/would-be franchise.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

It's probably funny. But I have no pressing need to go see it in the theater.
I'll watch it when it's on TV for free and likely enjoy it.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

edit:

Ah, this all silly, I'll let whoever wants to continue to feel "marginalized" by the movie feel that way so more reviews can be posted.

If they more ore less proved one is fake, and the email leaks say 'I'll make this a hit'....yeah, not all of them might be.. but it's not unreasonable to think alot COULD be. just the problem of fleshing them out with facts. hell, they even have people on imdb spreading the sony narrative. one of their screen names was included in a leaked email and now the users have fun trying to decipher the style of posts from the different accounts the original person sets up to try and hide ;o). not very smart ;o).

But yeah, I'm surprised so many ARE feeling safe to tear it to shreds.
I'd have thought alot more would be 70% more positive.

Mike Meyers's character in "So I married an Axe Murderer" kicked the evil Rose in the groin which helped him defeat her. Does that count?

And while not a movie, you can play the first two Fallout games as a male character and use VATS to target the groin area of any humanoid target with every weapon in the game from your bare fists to a gatling laser. And with the 'Bloody Mess' perk, when your groin attack kills a target they will explode barrage of blood and gore.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

Some more confirmation of the director's cut when released on DVD etc, I'm guessing a lot of the trailer stuff that was cut out of the theatrical release:

http://theplaylist.net/paul-feig-says-extended-cut-ghostbusters-will-hit-home-video-20160711/

I would expect nothing less from Paul. All three of his previous movies have received extended cuts and they're pretty good. In fact, one reviewer over at IO9.com commented saying that,

"it feels like maybe 30 minutes of the plot have been cut out and we’re right near the end of the movie."

so maybe this extended cut will actually make it even better?
*fingers crossed*

That one actual shill can be proven to exist does not translate into all or even many of the positive reviews being paid for.

Look, some people -- even those without an agenda -- are gonna like this film. That's the nature of art and entertainment. They're entirely subjective most of the time. So stuff that seems obviously awful will always find a few adherents. I'm sure there are positive reviews for each of the Bayformers movies. Doesn't mean Bay was slipping them wads of cash.

Like I said, Sony likely puts a thumb on the scale for social media purposes, and may promote friendly reviews, but buying tons of reviews? That's pretty far fetched.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

i'm going to try and stay off this topic, and i know everyone knows this by now, but it bares repeating in the sony revisionist history.

but it WAS the movies own fault. IT WAS a personal agenda right from the start.

even before we knew what went on in the email leak,
the very first tweet was 'get ready for four funny females busting ghosts next summer'. When it should have just mentioned ghostbusters. Then, Paul FigNewton mentioned in his tweet 'yes, and it will star funny women'. as if that was the question on all our lips...sorry, chapped lips and we where just DYING to know if that was the case or not.
The guys own ego played right into pascals hands, and she found someone to not only support and push her hateful agenda, but actually agreeing with it and going farther!

this thing deserves all the hate it gets. the agenda was right there from the start, and only the blind or those willing to ignore it, or those too afraid of backlash for pointing it out let it get this far.

Again, if you folks want to hate watch this without adding to the bottom line, there are options.
1- buy oreos (I believe it was) and get the free ticket offer. sony gets no money from that.
2- buy from fandango. I think that YTer said only something like $2's goes to sony, the rest goes to fandando or the theater.
3- Buy a full price ticket for another movie, and go into feigbusters instead.

Secret life of pets might get my money twice. or i'll just do the oreo thing. after bashing it for this long, I want to see how bad bad can get, so I can PROPERLY tear it to shreds in a review, so anyone who supports it won't have any place to hide when the facts are brought out. at least, my version of the facts that i see on screen. your version of the facts based on your sensibilities may of course vary ;o)
I also want to see the stunned silence, the shocked stares, the booing, and if anyone is still there bythe time the third act comes along. Viva la Vindication ;)
Sounds to me like you have already made up your mind regardless of what you think about the film when you see it.

Also, if you're going to see it, pay for the correct film, don't be a dick.

I made my mind up after Fiege openly insulted everyone who criticized the film. If a mayor of a town is up for re-election and he calls the people in the town he's trying to govern over a bunch of A-holes. are you going to go vote for him?

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

The problem is, there are two arguments that have been and will continue to be repeated 48483722262677584 times:

1) you can't have an opinion without seeing it.
2) it's a win if lots of people see it.

Even if they all hated it, they all SAW it, so it's a win. It's the problem that modern marketing has: there is no distinction between the audience liked it or the audience disliked it. The only yardstick is the size of the audience.

Re: Ghostbusters Post Release

I think you guys are painting a very weird picture of what goes on at Sony... No one in Marketing is writing cheques to buy reviews.

They may be in panic mode that this movie could bomb due to the negativity online, but I promise you they are rolling eyes and laughing at the "buying dorks on youtube for positive reviews" conspiracy theories.

Throwing money at getting all the cast of new and original on Kimmel or whatever? Yes absolutely...

Cutting trailer after trailer... flying stars around to every talk show with a pre written script to read? absolutely

Paying a youtube dude to say "I LIKED IT!"?... nope.

Paying for youtubers to see a special screening where they treat them like kings?... yep!... but EVERY MOVIE DOES THAT!

If this was Ghostbusters starring Bill Murray, Jonah Hill, Chris Pratt and Anna Kendrick with test screening scores through the ROOF, they would still put on a special screening for bloggers and youtubers to review it... and make them feel special with photo ops.
