Galactus inspired by Bowen statue / Byrne art

It was awesome! I was watching the show with my girlfriend and when I saw you win I was like, "wait a second..he commented on my thread!"
I'm honored sir.

You're honored? I'm honored! Thanks for noticing and I think Mr Freeze looks great!

Congrats! Well deserved win :thumbsup

Thanks I appreciate it! I have mixed feelings on the show, but there it is! It's neat to be on it and I can't complain.

Congrats on both an amazing costume and your tv appearance. Just another reminder as to how amazing the members of this forum are.

Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster. This is a great site and so much great information.

I finished this about march 2012. This is my first attempt at building anything like this. I have worn it to several shows now. It has been a lot of fun to wear. I am incredibly grateful at the reception I get with this suit.

Snikt recognized me from my avatar and I did not want to hijack that awesome Thanos thread, so I figured maybe I should start one.
The helmet took about 3 months to make. I used a 1/6th scale and it mostly worked. (I think the 2-D artists get to take a lot of liberties with the human form.) The helmet has a fiberglass cone as a base. I used a construction hardhat with a support structure inside as a base. The horns are made out of balsa wood. The brim and cones on the horn were carved out of foam and cast for durabilty. I used some plastic card for layers and a little bit of magice sculpt for rounded corners on the piping.

My wife did all the sewing. ( bless her heart! ) She used a lemay (?) fabric. I gravitated to that stuff due to the shininess.

The boots were the biggest pain. I made a fiberglass shell to go over the top of an engineer boot. Then I took some tubing and toggle bolted it around to get the 3 rings. That was a miserable fiberglass experience. I made the the jagged triangle area from hard pink insulation foam and covered it in plastic card.

The globe is made out of a hamster globe. The SIlver Surfer is a Marvel Legends action figure. I put some velcro on the inside of the shoulder "harness" and used a piece of clear plastice to support him.

Snikt asked if I will be going to SDCC in 2013 and to that I say yes! ( yay ) Originally I had not planned to bring Galactus down with us again but I got an invitation so I am going to wear it one more time. Overall it has survived the wear and travel pretty well. I worry about wearing it too many times tho.....

I am sure I am forgetting a bazillion details. I did not take pictures during the middle of the process. I do have a handful of the helmet build up tho.

Oh and probably about the coolest thing about it was getting it signed by Stan Lee!

I am always interested in comments and feedback.

Thanks for looking!

Weren't you on heroes of cosplay?

Greeting from the UK.
I am a big fan of your Galactus costume and after seeing that you had made a post here, I just had to join and post a comment! I dont believe I've seen anyone have a better costume than yours. I absolutely love it and you (and your wife) have set the standard for all future Galactus costumes (Mine included - which is currently in progress).

What colour/kind of paint did you use for your helmet? It looks very shiny.

Thanks for the comment, we really appreciate it!

The paint was sort of a convoluted mess that actually turned out. Originally the parts were primed with a heavy build primer called Duratec. After lots and lots of sanding, we used a base coat / clear coat automotive paint. Unfortunately, I used a pink that was too hot. So I scuffed it up and used an acrylic over the top of the pink. The color I used was Martha Stewarts Fruit Punch believe it or not. I added some liquitex Magenta in for shading as well. I also used a transparent purple for shading. This really dulled the finish down, but I needed to be done for a convention. Later I went back and redid the clear coat over the top, which shined it back up.

If I was going to try and replicate it, I would use a hot pink base coat. Go over it with the Fruit Punch and then shade with a transparent purple. I don't think the fruit punch color covers completely so the pink underneath it interferes and gives it a slightly different color.

Sorry....convoluted......

I also used some pearls in the blue and later colors. I think it adds a slight metallic look to the finish.

After I did this, I read it can be dangerous to use urethane clear coats over acrylics. The acrylics will continue to off gas and water will be working its way out of the paint. If it gets trapped behind a wall like a urethane clear coat, it will cause it to become cloudy. I suspect I got lucky in that a couple of months had passed before I recoated.

I think the real trick to good paint jobs is in the prep work. Sanding sanding sanding.

Please share pictures of your future Galactus! I would love to see a WIP and how you are going about it. I love that costume, but there are so many things I wish I would have done slightly different.
