Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster. This is a great site and so much great information.
I finished this about march 2012. This is my first attempt at building anything like this. I have worn it to several shows now. It has been a lot of fun to wear. I am incredibly grateful at the reception I get with this suit.
Snikt recognized me from my avatar and I did not want to hijack that awesome Thanos thread, so I figured maybe I should start one.
The helmet took about 3 months to make. I used a 1/6th scale and it mostly worked. (I think the 2-D artists get to take a lot of liberties with the human form.) The helmet has a fiberglass cone as a base. I used a construction hardhat with a support structure inside as a base. The horns are made out of balsa wood. The brim and cones on the horn were carved out of foam and cast for durabilty. I used some plastic card for layers and a little bit of magice sculpt for rounded corners on the piping.
My wife did all the sewing. ( bless her heart! ) She used a lemay (?) fabric. I gravitated to that stuff due to the shininess.
The boots were the biggest pain. I made a fiberglass shell to go over the top of an engineer boot. Then I took some tubing and toggle bolted it around to get the 3 rings. That was a miserable fiberglass experience. I made the the jagged triangle area from hard pink insulation foam and covered it in plastic card.
The globe is made out of a hamster globe. The SIlver Surfer is a Marvel Legends action figure. I put some velcro on the inside of the shoulder "harness" and used a piece of clear plastice to support him.
Snikt asked if I will be going to SDCC in 2013 and to that I say yes! ( yay ) Originally I had not planned to bring Galactus down with us again but I got an invitation so I am going to wear it one more time. Overall it has survived the wear and travel pretty well. I worry about wearing it too many times tho.....
I am sure I am forgetting a bazillion details. I did not take pictures during the middle of the process. I do have a handful of the helmet build up tho.
Oh and probably about the coolest thing about it was getting it signed by Stan Lee!
I am always interested in comments and feedback.
Thanks for looking!
