Fully Functional Vulcan Harp Finished! Video!

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Amazing work! Im looking forward to seeing and hearing the finished product. I would love to see the breakdown of the string guages and lengths; it is something I cannot seem to get right when making kinder-harps :-/

Colors are beautiful too BTW

Further progress

Working on the back electronics hatch.

Refining the shape of the upper tone knob.

Fabricated the aluminum control panel.

Full body shot.

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

These four knobs need to be resized from 1 inch down to 3/4 of an inch.

Next I will be veneering the back of the instrument. Many things to do yet!
This build is much more work then I originally thought it would be I easily have 40 hours into this at this point!

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Here is the back side of the harp all cut out and ready to veneer. The back hatch is for electronics access.

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Veneered the back today. I used sequenced walnut veneer so the back hatch grain is able to match up with the rest of.the back grain.

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Glueing is finally done. Here is the last dark raised edge drying. Should have some very cool shots in two hours...

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

The main body is together. Notice also that the speaker holes have been drilled on the back electronics hatch area. I am now on hour 88 of this project.

almost there!!!!
waiting on all the glue to dry takes for ever!!!
jobs like this seem like 75% clamping and gluing and 25% the fun stuff lol

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Ultraman

You got that right, waiting for the glue to dry between steps is like watching grass grow! LOL...

Wow. I haven't looked in on this thread in a few weeks. It's amazing the progress you've made. Such beautiful veneers you're working with.

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Thank you all for your kind words of support on this massive undertaking! As is often the case, you don't always understand what your getting into until your in deep, over your eyeballs with a prop project. This has been one of the props on my "bucket list" for quite some time. It is absolutely amazing to see it forming before my eyes finally! This project has become my tribute to the memory of Leonard Nimoy. I truly hope in his last moments he understood the people he touched and the lives that were changed in a positive way. RIP my friend.

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

Wow this is coming together beautifully. That stain really makes it pop! What type of finish will you use on top?

Re: Making a Fully Functional Vulcan Harp

I'll be using Min wax semi-gloss polyurethane. No stain just the natural wood color for the front and back. I know some of you will gasp that I am using polyurethane but I have had zero luck with lacquer, I always end up with orange peel when I try to use it.
