Anyone know where to get the digit font for the X-wing targeting computer?

Like the one seen here:

Thanks, that font looks similar to some stencil font. That one is close but the stencil cuts are in the wrong place. Hope I can find something a bit more accurate.

My working targeting screen needs a good font!!!! :cry

It looks like it's based on the "Nixie Clock" type - vacuum tube based clocks. Each numeral is an individual cathode "stacked" in the tube itself. The overlapping holder/support section for each numeral provides the "breaks" in each numeral's illumination depending on what order thay are stacked in the tube. I couldn't find a downloadable font that looks quite right but this may at least help wih the search...

Good Luck!

The problem is that there weren't a large number of fonts back in the 70s, so this probably doesn't really exists as an independent face. (Though someone might have created one. It may be from an old calculator, or more likely, an old stencil or a modified font. You might try moddingFutura D, (fontographer is your friend) or looking for those old ruler style stencils.

I could make it but I was trying to find something workable first. Last resort would be to make a sprite-based image counter, trying not to do that just yet.

I don't think it's a font. I think they used an actual counter with vacuum tube numbers. They used those things in THX 1138 too.

You should talk to Mike Rush. He made exactly what you are seeking in a flash program.

Thread is here:

His website where you can download his flash programs:

X/Y-wing display is on the very bottom.

I also found this site:

AG_XWingArabicNumbers.JPG

According to this dude the X-wing dispaly font is: "Arabic numerals on Luke's X-Wing display screen in Episode IV. (6)"

He says his source is theforce.net, but I doubt the info is correct. Googling Arabic font doesn't reveal much.

I also found this link:

I e-mailed the dude above, he seems to be a Star Wars font aficionado. Maybe he may know.

Mike Rush's interpretation is good enough for government I think. :)

I heard of this too. I actually had THX-1138 streaming via Netflix and was trying to find where I saw the font/ vacuum tube numbers displayed. Yeah, I doing this on a Saturday night. :lol

I know it is not an actual font. I get that. Like the other SW character types that have been replicated, I was hoping someone may have already tackled this.

I saw the m rush thing before. It is cool. But I am trying to make a real-time display that goes into the LFL X-wing. So I dont have the luxury of flash and other PC programs. I am writing this all from scratch! It sucks doing sprite graphics on a cheezy micro. So anything that would help with the number display would save me some time...

Arabic numerals are what the numbers 0-9 are called, it's not a font.

They just say that to indicate they are real numbers and no some alien symbols like Aurebesh.

Still nothing. A couple stencil fonts come close, but that strange "0" is a hard one to find. I might come back to this, still have to get the end game graphics to work.

I am beginning to believe this was most likely taken from a pixie tube. It matches up with the slits in the fonts. It cant be a nixie since those are continuous pieces.

I am guessing it was from a Valvo/Mullard or Burroughs 550 pixie. Dont know which one yet:

I think it maybe a nixie tube. Granted I don't know how they work, but I notice that most nixie tube has each digit overlapping like this:
Nixie2.gif

I notice from the first pic above. The first digit/symbol that looks like a "O" is exactly the same as the fifth and the sixth digit/symbol. Look at the fifth slot/digit. It's a "1" with an "O". The same "O" as the found in the first slot and sixth slot. I hope I'm making sense. :unsure It's because of all this overlapping it makes me believe it is some sort of nixie. The pixie you showed has each digit independent like a clock with no overlapping. Nixies seem like they can be wired up easier in a straight line/row for the X-wing display. I could be totally wrong though. Just my observation that the fifth digit looks like first digit with a "1" in the middle. Which makes me think that each slot is capable of displaying the same digit. Yet I haven't found any Nixie's with digits and a sorrounding light up circle. I don't think it would hurt to e-mail these Nixie enthusiasts to see if they've seen one with a digit + circle combo.

I also found this really interesting article written just seven days ago about Dan O'Bannon the computer animator behind the OG CG displays. He happen to have wrote Aliens also:

There's no contact info, but thre's a link http://www.well.com/user/cuba/ to Larry Cuba, the guy that did the Death Star Tactical display. I guess he worked with Dan O'Bannon. I e-mailed Larry to see what he knows. Shot in the dark, but you never know.

You guys are overcomplicating it!
It seems a lot like a light variation of a 60ies stencil Typeface, now available as Glaser Stencil
They even use the bold version on the new Battlefront II game...

As seen here

I've created these numbers as a font because I have not yet seen one nor a svg collection of those numbers. So I thought I'd share it here in case someone needs it :D

I did the TFA version of these numbers a while ago and shared them in my Graphics on the Forum. Maybe that’s good enough
