Foam Machine (Eventually pic heavy)

Hey fellow members, been lurking here for quite awhile. Finally got around to posting because I'm working towards a foam war machine (yes more ironman stuff) for halloween. In '09 I made a Master Chief for halloween. Funny thing was, all I wanted was to make an G1 Optimus Prime helmet. Here's a few pics of what I have. Most is based off pep, but I have freehanded some parts. I've done more, but I haven't uploaded the pics yet. I'll try to answer questions as best I can!
 
Awesome Master chief Armor. Always one of my favourites.

Looking forward to the Foam War Machine.
That's what I want to do next as well. In Foam.

Most practical medium for such a beast suit.

Thanks stealth for the compliment! I'm looking forward to seeing how you tackle warmachine. You're right, the foam works well for the design of the suit. I really like the mobility compared to fiberglass.


I finished most of the chest. I made the shoulder pods a little too narrow, but I guess I could add on to the sides to thicken it up. If the pieces look like it's not sitting right on my dummy, it's because I over stuffed the back, and the neck area is too thick.

Well for those interested I finally finished my helmet! Just a tip to those about to start working on their own, I separated the back and the face plate first, and had a hell of a time matching them up. I would recommend body working the whole helmet first then separating the helmet. It has a few imperfections though and it's not painted because I'm going to make a mold this week, it's pretty hefty and I'd like a lighter version for gallivanting. Sorry for the lame pic quality, apparently this is the best a galaxy s phone can do.

loogie, I'm using a mix of the sd and hd files. The helmet is the hd pep floating around here and on the 405th.
project, your system looks like it would take off a finger!
Kromanc, I kept Master chief, he hangs out in my living room. I'm using L300 from closedcellfoam.com. I'm also using some Eva floor mats I picked up from Sears. I don't recommend the L300 though, it doesn't cut as smooth and super glue doesn't work like it does with Eva.

I actually redid the shoulders, and want to redo the chest (not deep enough). I finished the boots, have most of the shins completed, and started the thighs. I've been working on the helmet off and on since January. I'll snap some progress of those sometime tomorrow.
On another note I'm going to use latex to make the mold. I did a quick test and it seems to hold the details. If anyone has any tips I'm all ears!
 
Shades, J0we, Yes, I will be casting the helmet. I hope to have a few casts before Oct. They will be raw though, I need to work on the rest of my suit:). I'm a snail compared to you guys! I've also never done this before, so no guarantees.

TK1625, yep I'm going to plastidip first, then I'm going to hit it with adhesion promoter, then paint. I did a test with just plastidip then paint, it ended up getting hairline cracks after a few bends.

Here's the rest of what I finished. I forgot to add that the helmet is scaled at 1.076739 which equals 189mm width. It's a bit smaller than a 100% IM helmet though. My head measures 6.5" in width and it fits in my rondoed out helmet with extra space. I figure if your noggin is about 7" you should be fine with a cast helmet.
 
Great looking helmet! Can't wait to see the finished foam suit. I've been debating whether to switch to foam as well.
