Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress. FINISHED!!!!...

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

I have painted many foam builds before and the way I do it, is just using Krylon spray paint. sometimes I use plastidip first to seal the foam. I am looking into cheaper ways to seal it. But I will be posting when I start the painting. If the days keep warmer up the way they are I should be able to start painting in a week or 2.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

krylon eh. i did some test piece without sealing and paint it with Krylon ultra flat olive. you can still see the tiny holes. how do you go around it without sealing ?

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

I normally just do several very VERY light thin coats.
I must admit I did just try doing a piece of foam with latex house paint and it took very well as a sealer.

Well I think the building is completed now.
I did this this morning.
Added the raised detail on to the neck area that I had forgot.
Worked on the beaded details. These are tacked on just for the picture I will remove them when painting.

Can the helmet be worn by actual people, or is the vacuum cleaner jealous?

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Great work!!! I just found the files for these last week and am dying t start one but need to finish my patriot first but now i have seen this its definitely high up the list for next project!!!

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Thanks guys,
Unfortunately I have come to a stand still on this build, the stupid weather is stopping me from doing any sealing and painting. Over the past 2 days we have another 4 inchs of snow!!. Yup April 17th and it is currently snowing outside, it is supose to snow the rest of the week and on and off for the rest of the frakking month!!!!..

I was able to do a little tester though on a small piece of foam. I have been told and done some research on poeple sealing their foam with Latex house paint. So I decided to buy a small can and give it a go. here is what it looks like.

As you can see it works ok, I did 3 very light coats and it took well. The key for me is that when I placed tape on a painted area to mask it off, none of the paint came off when I removed the tape. I am really happy with this overall test and I think my wallet is even happier..

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Are you planning on using the latex house paint as a sealer only, or as your actual colours in the paint job Familyman?

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

I'm also working on a foam project and I'm using Polycrylic Sealer. (mines made by MINWAX and I found it at Home Depot) Its water based and comes in both spray and brush on forms. I'm using the brush on kind and it seals and bends very well. Also I have put several paint colors on it with absolutely no problems so far. The can cost me about $12

Just a suggestion.

Phantom, what is the sealer typically used for? And do you happen to know the active ingredients? Just so I can try and find a similar product in Australia and check out it's properties.

Typically its used to seal indoor wood furniture. I believe its just a water based polyurethane sealer. If you go to the Directions tab on this page Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish - Interior Clear Protective Finishes - Minwax it will give you the ingredients. Hope it helps.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

If you are using the house paint make sure you use some sort of clear coat on it. It bends really well but, if it rubs on itself it will tear the paint.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

I've had good luck using Latex Kilz to prime, painting with various cheap acrylics, and then using Future Acrylic floor wax to seal. It stays fairly flexible and durable and even smells nice.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Thanks guys, not sure about the full costume yet, I have so much on my work table.
FInally spring has arrived, it snowed 18 inch 5 days ago, and today we have around 17 degrees.. it is soooo nice. I was a ble to get some painting done outside.
I first painted the foam with a latex house paint to help seal the foam. By the time I finished the first coat it was dry enough for me to just start the second layer. I did 3 layers and then went on to the spray painting. I have done two layers of sliver at the moment, I will do some more tomorrow.. here is what I have so far. I am really pleased with it so far.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Well I was able to do some more painting this morning, I masked off some areas and went at it with the gold spray. I have to do a little touching up where the masking failed and maybe even do a black wash.

This is SO awesome. I don't even know the series, but this makes me want to watch it.... (don't mock me, I'm probably too young for battlestar galactica to have seen it in my youth)

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress. Started painting!!..
