First time with anything fx/makeup related

Hello there! I'm new not only to the forum but to all that's related with makeup, fx, prosthetics, sculpting (although that I do digitally), you get the picture. Total newbie. So, after reading a bit about this and that I decided to do a severed finger made of latex. It seemed the easy to start with because I could use my own finger as a mold (yeah I know, my servered finger is actually a negative of my own and that sucks, but it's the first one so I'll let it go)
And here it is

Ok so now the problems: I had to paint it with a mix of liquid make up, foundation and acrylics, and half of it kept falling off again and again so eventually I got tired and just sprayed it with matte barnish. I don't know why I didn't noticed how awful the paint looked that time :S I swear before it didn't have those light spots and looked pretty better. But anyway, since it was matte it didn't look like skin at all. So I got the wonderful idea of painting it with transparent nail polish. Which did make it shine, but certainly not the way skin does. And I know the pro people has airbrushes, or something that seals the paint or a liquid that makes it shine like skin does but where I live none of that exists. I had to struggle a lot just to get the latex. So I'm asking for tips and critiques and ideas of what materials I can use, as long as they can be found in any normal house -.-
For example, I've been told that if I make a model in clay before aplying the latex I could paint it with dish soap to prevent the latex from sticking. But also somebody told me it was unnecesary. I know there's a special liquid that's used for that, but then again, I can't get it here.
Or another question I have is: if I make a prosthetic, say for example a nose, I'm supposed to stick it to the face with more latex? Because that's what I read but when I was making the finger I could see how the borders where already peeling off :S
And that's it for now. Sorry about the long post, the crappy pictures and any help is really appreciated =)
