First-time R2 builder. What are some good starting tips?

First, yes I already joined the R2 Builder's Forum, but I'm waiting for their mods to approve my membership, and I wanted to get a head start on this. So I figured I'd start here and see what you all had to say about your builds.

I plan on building my R2's structure from 3/4" plywood almost exclusively and skin it with sheet styrene, and it will have full R/C capability (forward/back, turning, head turning, sound board). There are still a lot of questions I have, like how to make the dome and who the optimal source for parts are on a budget, though I might just scratch build them anyway. I also want a good source for plans so I can start cutting as soon as school lets out.
