First Look: Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man Costume

Been sitting here staring at that photo for five minutes. I'm sure it won't bug me as much once I get used to it but, man, those stripes down the legs strike me as just really unnecessary. I will say I DO like the brighter colors though.

watch out, you might go blind :)

Those stripes are racing stripes....makes spidey run faster...

Maybe its a fake out or ploy to get the interest in franchise again. Stage a few shots get people reacting, then come out with the real thing. It was like that for the first spiderman all the concept art leaned towards alex ross.

Closer Look at Spidey on the Set! | Superhero Hype

We do have to stress that what you see here and what you may see in the movie may be slightly different as this costume is probably specifically made for stunt work.

Slightly different only gives it a slight chance of possibly sucking slightly less. This thing sucks pretty bad.

I love it.. hey guys, you had 3 movies with the normal spidey suit, it's time for something different. Can't wait to see the movie now!

stunt costumes still have to look the same from a distance, the hero isn't going to look much different.

That's what I was about to say. While I'm not as active in screen-used prop collecting like I used to be, I'm quite familiar with the differences between "stunt" and "hero" stuff. The differences in costumes like that are often pretty negligible unless there's some kind of very specific use for the costume (harness work, fireproof material, fake shoes that look like feet as previously mentioned or whatever). I highly doubt there's going to be any changes done via CGI and those shoes aren't remotely camouflaged which suggests to me that IS the final design.

Considering the nature of that costume, the fact they clearly aren't filming a closeup in that scene AND the fact that those shoe things aren't even remotely camouflaged, I'd be willing to bet that's the final design... not something that's going to be removed digitally in post.

God the mask is terrible... What's with the eyes?!?!? I'm REEEEAAAAALLLLLLYY hoping the hero mask looks better than this thing. Let's hope they fix some of this stuff in post!!

Can somebody tell me where we've seen this happen with practical costumes? I'm trying to think of instances not where CGI was used to create or enhance a look like Rorshach (sp?) in Watchmen or Two-Face in The Dark Knight but rather instances where a design was filmed one way and literally changed to a different design in post.

The only example I can even come up with is Iron Monger from the first Iron Man movie.

Anybody else have any examples I'm forgetting or overlooking?

I really don't think this whole "maybe they'll fix it in post" stuff holds much water, y'know? They could do it but you really think they WILL do it?

I was under the impression that the lens of the Goblin helmet that Dafoe wore in the first Spiderman movie were clear for the actor and stuntmen to see where they were going, but opaqued in post with CG. But not a radically different design to the whole costume, no, I can't think of one either.

One wonders though if the backlash this is getting might make them change this suit immediately and reshoot anything they can though and CG the rest.

Seem to me the "I HATE THIS" reaction is running in at least an 80% range at this point everywhere. Unless this is merely one of several costumes that Spiderman will have in the film.

This suit would look even dumber that the old 1970's Spiderman if that didn't have that scrawny actor whose hips seemed wider than his shoulders in that. Seriously, how could anyone have looked at this or that 70's Spidey suit and not said "We're gonna be a laughing stock?"

Hate the mechanical web-shooters too which I ALWAYS thought, even when I was a kid was a dumb idea, that one nerd, no matter how nerdy could create something that all adhesive companies in the world would literally kill for. The organic web-shooters was such a no-brainer in the Raimi movies even Stan Lee went d'oh 'why didn't I think of that?'.

This movie looks like one last on the cheap money grab before the whole Spiderman things gets locked in some legal limbo for a decade or two...

My thoughts exactly... theres too much fridge logic involved here. ALL those other spider powers, leaping, reflexes, wall crawling, etc, etc, etc but NO webbing? What the flying hell??!?!?!?! :confused

My guess is this guy is trying to combine VERY new stuff with VERY old stuff in some half-hearted attempt to appease hard core old school fans by throwing in some classic and obscure aspects about Spidey so they will better tolerate the new changes..... just my thoughts on it at least

While i agree on the organic webbing issue, i have always wanted to see the mechanical ones... that said my favourite idea is the middle ground that pleases both schools of thought. organic web glands but with no real way of controling the flow or web pattern, so the mechanical device is not a shooter per se, but a web focusing / flow / pattern controller like a mechanical spinnerette. more believable that way to me and not beyond the realms of belivabilty.

I showed the picture of Spidey running to my wife to get her non-geek opinion. I pointed out the changes with my commentary that 'this stripe down the leg is really weird.' Her reply "well, they had to do something different - it's just a red and blue onesy after all." :lol

Okay, so this is an interesting possible explanation for the design of the suit... it could possibly be the wrestling suit after all and not the final look in the film. Check out the article with info about a mini-series published "outside" of 616 continuity.
