First bit of R6 done, (restraining bolt, lol)

Hi all

This may be a bit of a sad post, but itÂ’s the first complete bit, (or bit that goes with my R6) that is done.

As the title says restraining bolt done. While I have read some people glue them on, and some screw them I had no intention of doing either and ruining the body skin. So after making the initial shape from downloaded plans, I played around with magnets to see what would work.

Now as most are made from alloy or fibreglass, a magnet on its own wonÂ’t work, so it needs something behind the body to stick to. I tried all sorts of magnets on my test plate, most being strong enough to hold it against the body while stationary, but slid down when jiggle about. I ended up using two super strong Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets, (donÂ’t ask me what that means it was on the packet) one sunk into the base and one to go on the back of the body skin out of sight.

My test was a length of 3/16th alloy plate and it held firmly in place even with me dancing while holding it. (That caused a few giggles)

Its cast from polyurethane resin with alloy powder mixed in so although itÂ’s not as shiny as real buffed alloy, it has a more old used look to it, but shines if the light catches it right.

Now back to the hard stuff, the dome :(

I did the same with my aluminum restraining bolt with a couple of magnets salvaged from a hard drive. Really strong magnets and it works great.
