I have been milling in 3 axises for a while and have just recently installed the 4th axis which basically turns the cnc mill into a lathe. It allows the stock to be rotated 360 degrees while the mill cuts out the 3d model.
Hydin asked me to see how the superman returns crystal would come out using it, so this was my first attempt using my 4th axis.

I used a 2x4 for the stock and the low quality of the wood affected the final model, but it still has the basic shape.

Very nice splinter indeed.

But this is a manual machine right? Isn't it hard when trying more complex shapes?

The machine is computer controlled. So a 3d model is made in a program like 3ds or rhino then the software creates a tool path then machines it. Normaly you would use aluminum as the stock, but with cheap wood you can test out your tool path quickly because the cutting tool can plunge deep into the wood wher it would need to lightly shave aluminum.

Probably yes but nobody would be able to hear it.

Would it grow a forest if you threw it?
