FireFly - Should I start watching it?

I know people love this short-lived series and I've never seen it. Is it worth watching knowing that I'll be broken-hearted that Fox pulled the plug on it at the end?

I've been burned before (I'm looking at you Terminator:TSCC).

Thanks for your thoughts!

I think it's worth watching. Yeah, if you fall in love with it, you'll be brokenhearted at the end, but it's one hell of a ride. The chemistry between the actors is amazing.

I enjoyed the show a lot. I got into it just as the film was being released, and there was some notion that the story could continue beyond the film.

After watching the film a few times...I'd have to say that I'd just watch the show and leave it at that. It ends without resolving several mysteries, but the end of the series/season feels basically "ok." The film shakes a lot of that stuff up and is a good bit darker and less pleasant and fun. It has fun moments, but it's also got some moments in it which I think were....poorly constructed. It's a shame, because there's a lot to like about the film.

But honestly, here's the truth: Firefly is NOT the be-all/end-all that its most rabid fans claim it is. It's a good show. It was entertaining. It was well written. It had a novel premise. But it's not TEH GREATAST SHOW EVAR!!!11!!ONE!!ZOMG!!! And it is also, most certainly, DEAD. This show isn't coming back. Ever. It had it's moment, and that moment passed. I think much of the fandom is oriented around this romantic notion that they can somehow rally together to bring it back some day, but that day has come and gone.

Lastly, it's Joss Whedon. That means that all the good (clever writing, solid stories, interesting characters) comes with all the bad (romance is handled...somewhat poorly; characters are killed for apparently capricious reasons).

If you can handle all of that, then enjoy the ride. It is a fun show. But don't buy into the hype that surrounds the show or the zeal of the hardest of hardcore fans. It's a good show. That's all.

Solo4114 has given a pretty accurate summary.

It's good, it's not amazing but it's good. I dislike some aspects of Joss Whedon's work and as mentioned above, the poorly handled romance is one of the cringe-worthy things about it. I really disliked Buffy the Vampire Slayer, for instance; I thought it was teen crap.

I find Whedon's work to be a mixed bag. It's always entertaining (and I appreciated Buffy in its historical context -- it was very much ahead of its time), but he has certain tropes to which he adheres, and it's gotten to be just sort of a thing he does. It was edgy and interesting once, and now it's old hat to me. Kinda like Tarantino, actually. When he first hit, he was edgy and new and interesting, but now you watch his stuff because you know you'll get the "Tarantino experience," not because he's gonna break any new ground or push any boundaries with his art. If you like his style, you watch. If not, you steer clear because you know what you're gonna get. Whedon's style hasn't, in my opinion, evolved a ton. So, if you like it, great. If you want more from it....keep looking.

I would suggest it was pretty remarkable. Great premise well executed, terrific cast, excellent writing, and a lot of heart. Definitely worth watching, it won't take long!

If that is how you feel about TSCC, DON'T DO IT!!!!

You will be heartbroken in the end! :lol

I like the series a lot and watch it beginning to end every other month or so. The best part is the more you watch, the more little nuggets of fun you find.

I think I was just hopeful with T:SCC because I was watching it as they were released and really wanted it to keep going. Knowing FireFly has an end will be better going in, I think.

I think it's a very fun show with great dialogue and witty banter. It also has some cool costumes and props ... so win win

Yes! because its "TEH GREATAST SHOW EVAR!!!11!!ONE!!ZOMG!!!". In all seriousness yes I think it was a fantastic series but pace yourself. I wouldn't recommend watching all the episodes back to back. When you've finished the series then check out the Serenity the movie.

I keep a extra copy of the series on bluray and the Serenity on bluray to let people borrow lol

Yes, the props are awesome sauce!

Yeah you will love it.

Opposite happened with me on TSCC, I knew it was cancelled abruptly but I bought the Dvds a few years after it ended and I was STILL PISSED!! :lol

Good to still see you around Chimp!

A simple YES!!!! Watch it, but be prepared to be disappointed by the "Serenity" movie.

You should do it in the following chronological order:

1) watch "Firefly"
2) read the comic "Serenity: Those left behind"
3) watch the "Serenity" movie

Browncoats are EVERYWHERE! I was wearing a Blue Sun t-shirt in LA a few weeks ago and I had 3 different people comment on it in passing. Crazy.
