This was a labor of love, and I think it shows. I started out pestering a friend of mine who does 3d work to make the coin so I could get it printed by shapeways. Obviously, printing a coin would be amazing and awesome and in silver it would kick ass, so there should be no issues? Right?
HAHAHAHAHA OH YOU SWEET SUMMER CHILD. Nope. Not printable in silver, metal, any variant thereof, etc. Details on this thing are CRAZY tiny (.35m thickness on some parts of the lettering), and even in their High Def Black Acrylate, the coin kept breaking.
I managed to score some behind the scenes prop pics which helped a TON, because the CGI used in a lot of the close up scenes looked pretty awful. Noodly armed Art Deco ***** for one. Weird moments where the lettering looking inset, then raised, it's just a mess sometimes. Well, we finally got the coin looking right and go the prototypes looking right and printed correctly, and then it came time to find someone who makes coins. Unfortunately we couldn't work out a way to get the weathered look to it (sort of a wrinkly effect on part of it), so we had to go with a smoothed version. Still, it's a minor enough detail that I don't mind losing it.
I've used these guys in the past. They do amazing work (they did the tiamat coin replica from Supernatural I did a few years ago), and while the first test came out a little weird (as seen in the album), the second one (above) came out looking amazing. That's the antique gold finish, and the antique silver finish. Looks a bit weird because of the flash of the camera, but I am so incredibly happy to have this piece finished up.
The only other one I have seen online (and do own, since it was the only one available at the time) is a not so accurate version from a website I found. It's well worth the entire 10$ I spent on it, but there was way too much wrong with it (names in wrong places, wrong details on the 2 sides, etc) for it to really scratch that "AUGH DAMMIT THIS NEEDS TO BE PERFECT" itch that we all have here in out collective insanity. So, this was finished up.
I'm pretty proud of how it came out and I cannot WAIT to see how the shiny gold color looks. Mainly though, I just wanted to show off the hard work that went into making this beautiful piece. It came out looking great, and I am incredibly thankful to the people who helped make this happen.
Hopefully we will see this again in Season 2. I still can't believe they didn't do a blu ray pack of the season 1 with the coin as a prop piece with the boxed set.
Anyway, enough yabbering, just wanted to share
Chris
