Finding the e-11 cylinders

I was looking at the pic in post 4 of this thread:
http://www.therpf.com/index.php?showtopic=123922&hl=e-11

And I thought to myself that they really reminded me of a hinge we had on a door the swung in and out. I did a search and found that what I was thinking of is a double acting spring hinge. I could only find modern examples but I really am seeing a hinge or maybe 2 next to each other. What do you think, am I crazy?

I believe that the cyclinders are part of a larger unit as they can be seen on the top of the mouse droid as well as the front of Luke's landspeeder.

I think the current belief is that they may be part of some old electronics equipment. Perhaps fuse holders or the like.

I once found a cardboard and plastic fuse holder peice that was very close to the E11 cylinders. Its probly safe to say that unless someone pops up and says "oh, my grandpa used to work with.. so I recognize those as..." we wil never know.

Has anyone thought about trying to contact Lorne Peterson? He might know what they used. He may have even built the mouse droid. Can't hurt to try.

Any one have a good screen shot of the cyclinders?

I'll do you one better. Here's a closeup of the cylinders on the screen used landspeeder. This was taken at the Boston Museum of Science star wars exhibit

this is what they look like in their natural state. The same configuration can be seen on the top of the mouse droid, just painted black.

Lorne Peterson was/is at ILM in California.
The droids were the work of the UK prop department, landspeeder too.
Whatever the cylinders are they were greeblies used by the UK guys.

Oh well, I guess we'll never know.

We don't talk like that around these parts... If every part of the Obi-Wan saber can be identified, these cylinders can be as well.

Since the bigger, shorter cylinders look like vacuum tube sockets, the thing from the landspeeder and mouse droid is probably a radio chassis or other electronic device, so the slimmer, longer cylinders could be resistors. Could be tunable coils, I suppose. I don't think they're fuse holders. It looks like something with several stages, like an amplifier, for example. Hard to tell if a lead is clipped off of the top or if it's a screw for a tuned coil. I'm leaning toward some kind of coil or transformer.

(Tube sockets can be seen here: http://www.tubetoneamps.com/productpages/t...tubesockets.htm )

Well, that's my $.02, probably nothing that wasn't known already...

The nubs on the ends are hex bolts.

Hmm. I think you're right. I really need new glasses...

I talked to the senior electronics engineer at my work and he feels that they are power resistors. He felt the board looked military grade and mostlikely was from a submarine. he was just spitballing here so don't take this as hard data. I found this pic of some simmilar style resistors as he was talking about.

Mouse droid at MOM in Sydney a few years ago. Sorry the pic isn't clearer - I didn't realise the significance of them at the time.

I think the cylinders are wire wound resistors and the larger round pieces are valve holders. I've had one person suggest that it's part of a RF power amplifier.

I had these in one of my folders. I hope they help.

EDIT: Sorry I had to take these down for space I needed in the JY....if anyone needs them shoot me a PM :)

I've been working on researching these over the last several days before this thread popped up.

The large short cylinders are 7-pin vacuum tube sockets. Easy to find on their own, but only helpful to MSE droid or landspeeder builders.
I haven't had much luck yet locating the whole assembly except that there are some possible relations to other prop parts.

1. 7-pin vacuum tubes are used in amplifiers often in rows of 6.
2. Chewbacca's bowcaster has a Fender amplifier knob on it, so does Luke's hunting rifle.
3. Vader's ANH belt boxes have amplier or radio mesh/screen in the long slots.
4. The bottom of the racks look padded (for sound vibration protection?)
5. IIRC Andrew Ainsworth even mentioned they used amplifier parts.
6. C-3PO's eyes are reportedly machined from turntable weights.

Nothing really solid enough to disregard research in other areas yet, but I do believe audio equipment is the most likely source o the parts.
I have not seen any large resistors like those paired with rows of 7-pin vac tubes inside amps yet.

There are 2 plates with model/serial numbers on them in DL 44 Blaster's second pic. can anyone read them? Higher res version?
